Himachal Pradesh Mandi MC Elections 2026: BJP & Congress Face Rebel Crisis as 59 Candidates Enter Fray
The upcoming Mandi Municipal Corporation (MC) elections have taken a dramatic turn as both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress find themselves battling internal rebellion just days before polling.
The upcoming Mandi Municipal Corporation (MC) elections have taken a dramatic turn as both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress find themselves battling internal rebellion just days before polling.
On the final day of nominations, a total of 43 candidates filed their papers, taking the overall number of contestants to 59. While the rising number of candidates has already made the contest intense, the bigger concern for both parties is the growing number of rebel candidates entering the fray as Independents.
Rebels Shake Congress Strongholds
The Congress appears to be facing serious trouble in multiple wards. In Khaliyar ward, the situation has turned into a high-stakes multi-cornered battle. Sitting councillor Alaknanda Handa and youth leader Vivek Saini have both rebelled against the party after being denied tickets. They are now contesting as Independents against the official Congress candidate Praveen Kumar, who is also related to senior party leader Kaul Singh Thakur.
This internal split is likely to divide the traditional Congress vote bank, giving rivals a potential advantage.
In Talyahar ward, Congress is once again dealing with dissent, as rebel candidate Akash Sharma has decided to contest independently, further complicating the party’s electoral calculations.
BJP Also Hit by Internal Dissent
The BJP is not immune to rebellion either. In Behna ward, a sitting BJP councillor has chosen to contest as an Independent after being denied a ticket, signaling discontent within the party ranks.
The situation is equally tense in Palace Colony-1, where BJP worker Pushpa Thakur has openly rebelled against the party’s decision to field the wife of a sitting councillor.
Meanwhile, Bhagwan Mohalla ward has emerged as a major flashpoint for BJP. Rebels Chander Shekhar and Anil Kumar have both entered the race as Independent candidates. Notably, Anil Kumar is the husband of current councillor and Deputy Mayor Madhuri Kapoor, making the contest even more politically sensitive.
Multi-Cornered Contests Likely to Impact Results
Political analysts believe that such widespread rebellion could significantly impact the electoral outcome. The presence of multiple Independent candidates is expected to split votes in several wards, turning direct contests into triangular or even multi-cornered battles.
This scenario may weaken the winning prospects of both national parties and open doors for unexpected results.
Focus Shifts to Damage Control
With the nomination process now closed, the focus has shifted to whether party leaderships can manage the damage. Efforts are likely underway to persuade rebel candidates to withdraw before the deadline.
However, if these attempts fail, the rebellion could play a decisive role in shaping the final results of the Mandi MC elections.
