In a major push towards strengthening its social security framework, the Himachal Pradesh government has significantly expanded pension coverage, bringing nearly 1 lakh new beneficiaries under its umbrella over the past three years.
With the addition of 99,799 new beneficiaries, the total number of pensioners in the state has now reached 8.42 lakh, reflecting the government’s continued focus on inclusive welfare.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stated that the expanded pension network now supports a wide range of vulnerable groups, including senior citizens, widows, single women, and persons with disabilities. “Our priority is to ensure that no eligible individual is left behind,” he said.
Wide Coverage Across Welfare Schemes
The state’s pension system currently includes multiple schemes catering to different needs:
- Over 1.04 lakh beneficiaries receive support under the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme
- More than 5.04 lakh individuals are covered under the state old age pension scheme
- Around 25,414 widows benefit from the Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme
- Nearly 1.26 lakh women are supported under the widow, destitute and single woman pension scheme
- 78,291 persons with disabilities receive financial assistance through the Disability Relief Allowance
Steady Growth in Beneficiaries
The state has consistently added new beneficiaries each year:
- 41,799 cases approved in 2023-24
- 41,012 cases in 2024-25
- 16,988 cases in 2025-26
Additionally, a dedicated scheme provides monthly pensions ranging from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 to over 2.67 lakh women up to 69 years of age, offering crucial financial support.
Big Relief for Persons with Disabilities
In a significant step, the government has increased the monthly pension for individuals with 100% disability from ₹1,700 to ₹3,000, directly benefiting around 7,000 people. This move is expected to ease financial stress for some of the most vulnerable citizens.
Simplified Rules, Faster Access
Beyond expanding coverage, the government has introduced key structural reforms to make the system more accessible:
- Removal of income ceiling criteria
- No requirement for Gram Sabha approval for widowed, deserted, and single women
- Simplified process for persons with 40–69% disability
These changes are designed to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and ensure that beneficiaries can access pensions without unnecessary delays or complications.
A Step Towards Inclusive Welfare
The reforms signal a clear intent to build a more inclusive and efficient welfare system. By widening eligibility and simplifying procedures, Himachal Pradesh is moving closer to ensuring timely financial support for those who need it the most.
