In a significant step toward modernizing road safety and licensing systems, Himachal Pradesh has launched its first-ever automated driving test facility in Haroli. The advanced testing track, inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, is expected to transform the way driving licences are issued in the state.

Built at an estimated cost of ₹9 crore, the facility is located in Rora village and is equipped with cutting-edge sensor technology and high-definition cameras. These systems monitor every movement of a vehicle and driver in real time, ensuring an unbiased and highly accurate evaluation process with minimal human interference.

Speaking at the inauguration, Agnihotri emphasized that the new system will eliminate subjectivity in driving tests, making the process more transparent and efficient. He highlighted that the facility is among the most advanced in North India, featuring a comprehensive testing setup for light motor vehicles. This includes critical driving assessments such as parallel parking, junction handling, incline driving, and maneuverability checks.

The entire testing process has been digitized, allowing applicants to conveniently book their driving test slots online. Authorities believe this will significantly reduce waiting times and improve overall efficiency. To further enhance public convenience, plans are already in place to construct an additional building with a dedicated waiting area for applicants.

Looking ahead, the government is preparing to expand the facility in its next phase to include testing infrastructure for heavy vehicles like buses and trucks, making it a complete solution for all categories of driving licences.

Beyond its primary function, the complex is also being developed as a traffic education hub. It will serve as a practical learning center for school students, helping them understand road safety rules and responsible driving from an early age—an initiative that could have long-term benefits for road discipline in the region.

In a broader push for regional development, Agnihotri also announced multiple infrastructure projects around Rora. These include a ₹10 crore plan to convert the Rora ground into a permanent venue for fairs and festivals. The site recently hosted the popular Haroli Utsav, which saw strong participation, encouraging the government to expand the event further in the future.

Additionally, a one-kilometer stretch from the Haroli-Rampur Bridge to the Rora T-junction will be developed as ‘Vikas Path,’ showcasing modern infrastructure with improved lighting and urban design.

Positioning Rora as an emerging urban hub, the government has also proposed a ₹19 crore heliport project to enhance connectivity with Shimla and Chandigarh, along with a ₹10 crore synthetic athletic track to boost sports infrastructure in the area.

With these initiatives, Himachal Pradesh is not only upgrading its transport systems but also laying the foundation for smarter, safer, and more connected urban growth.
