A massive fire broke out in the early hours of Monday at the iconic Heritage Market in Kasauli, reducing multiple shops to ashes and leaving local traders in shock. The incident, which occurred around 3 am, destroyed eight shops, including eateries, gift stores, and a pharmacy, causing heavy financial and emotional losses.
The market, known for its decades-old establishments, witnessed scenes of chaos as flames rapidly spread through closely packed structures.
Short Circuit Suspected, LPG Cylinder Blasts Worsen Situation
Initial reports suggest that the fire was triggered by a short circuit in external wiring near one of the eateries. However, the situation quickly escalated when several LPG cylinders stored inside the shops began exploding.
These back-to-back blasts intensified the fire, making it extremely difficult for firefighters to control the flames and increasing the risk to lives and nearby properties.
Delayed Response and Water Shortage Hamper Firefighting
Fire personnel reached the spot at around 4:55 am with a single fire tender, but by then the fire had already spread significantly. Locals gathered at the site helplessly, watching years of hard work turn into ashes.
Authorities later called for reinforcements from nearby areas including Solan and Parwanoo. Fire tenders from the Air Force also joined the rescue operation.
Despite efforts, repeated LPG explosions and a critical water shortage slowed down operations. The initial fire tender reportedly ran out of water within minutes, further delaying containment.
Fire Brought Under Control After Hours of Struggle
The blaze was finally brought under control by around 9 am after a coordinated multi-agency effort. However, it took nearly six more hours to completely extinguish the fire.
Out of the eight affected shops, seven were completely destroyed, while one suffered partial damage, losing nearly 40% of its stock.
Families Lose Livelihoods, Traders Raise Serious Concerns
The fire has left several families devastated. Among those affected are local shopkeepers who depended entirely on these businesses for their livelihood.
One trader, whose family-run shop had been operating since 1965, described the loss as “irreparable.” Another shop owner said the tragedy was not just financial but deeply emotional, as generations of work were lost overnight.
Allegations of Negligence Against Authorities
Local traders and residents have raised serious concerns about safety lapses in the cantonment area. They highlighted:
- Lack of regular fire safety drills
- Absence of proper fire preparedness systems
- No night watchman in a busy commercial zone
Many believe that better preparedness could have minimized the damage.
Administration Response and Advisory
Officials have confirmed that a short circuit was the likely cause of the fire, while the presence of LPG cylinders significantly worsened the disaster.
Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and contact emergency helpline 1077 in case of any disaster or emergency.
Human Angle: A Market That Held Memories Now in Ruins
Beyond the numbers and damage, the tragedy has deeply affected the soul of Kasauli’s Heritage Market. For many families, these shops were more than businesses—they were legacies passed down through generations.
Today, all that remains is debris, memories, and an uncertain future.
