In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Donald Trump has ordered a sweeping maritime blockade of the Strait of Hormuz following the collapse of marathon US-Iran negotiations in Islamabad.

The high-stakes talks, mediated by Pakistan and lasting over 24 hours, ended without a breakthrough, highlighting deep divisions between Washington and Tehran—particularly over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Shortly after the negotiations failed, Trump announced that the United States Navy would begin blocking “any and all ships” entering or leaving the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes. The move is being seen as one of the most aggressive steps in the ongoing standoff.

“Most points were agreed to, but the only one that mattered—nuclear—was not,” Trump said, signaling that the US stance on Iran’s nuclear programme remains firm and non-negotiable.

Talks Collapse Despite Marathon Negotiations

US Vice President JD Vance, who led the American delegation, described the discussions as “substantive” but admitted that both sides failed to resolve key differences.

According to officials, the central sticking point remained Washington’s demand for a long-term, verifiable guarantee that Iran would not develop nuclear weapons.

“We’ve made our best offer. Now the choice lies with Iran,” Vance said before departing Islamabad.

Despite progress on several secondary issues, the nuclear question ultimately derailed the negotiations.

Iran Signals Distrust but Keeps Door Open

On the Iranian side, officials struck a cautious tone, acknowledging progress but emphasizing longstanding mistrust.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said the talks covered multiple issues, including sanctions relief, regional security, and war-related concerns.

“We reached understanding on several points, but major disagreements remain,” Baghaei stated, adding that decades of tension have created an atmosphere of “mistrust and suspicion.”

Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf reiterated that Tehran entered the talks in good faith but remains wary due to past conflicts.

“The US must now decide whether it can earn our trust,” he said.

Global Implications: Why Hormuz Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital artery for global energy supplies, with nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments passing through it daily. Any disruption could trigger:

  • Sharp spikes in global oil prices
  • Supply chain disruptions
  • Increased geopolitical instability in the Middle East

Experts warn that a prolonged blockade could impact economies worldwide, including energy-importing nations like India.
