Just days before the wheat harvest season, farmers in the lower regions of Kangra district are facing growing anxiety as untimely rain and unstable weather conditions threaten their standing crops.

Areas such as Nurpur, Indora, Fatehpur, and Nagrota Surian—known for their wheat production—have witnessed continuous rainfall over the past week. This sudden shift in weather has raised serious concerns among farmers, many of whom were preparing to begin harvesting.

In some parts of Indora and Kangra blocks, early signs of crop lodging—where crops bend or fall due to excess moisture and wind—have already been reported. For farmers, this is a worrying signal of potential losses ahead.

“I have never been this stressed before harvest,” said a local farmer from Indora. “If this rain continues, our entire season’s hard work could be wasted.”

Farmers who sowed wheat during the ideal November–December window are particularly vulnerable right now, as their crops have reached maturity. At this stage, excess moisture can not only delay harvesting but also reduce grain quality and overall yield.

Agriculture experts warn that prolonged wet conditions, especially when combined with strong winds, can weaken crop roots and increase the chances of lodging. Waterlogging further worsens the situation, making it difficult for farmers to salvage their produce without incurring higher harvesting costs.

However, not all regions are equally affected. Farmers in the upper areas of Kangra district, where wheat was sown later in January, have experienced some relief. For them, light rainfall is actually beneficial, especially after a dry winter spell.

Kuldeep Dhiman, Deputy Director of Agriculture in Palampur, has urged farmers to stay cautious and proactive. He emphasized the importance of proper drainage in fields to prevent water stagnation and reduce the risk of crop damage.

“Farmers should immediately report any losses caused by natural calamities to the concerned authorities,” Dhiman advised. He also reminded those enrolled under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) to report damage within 72 hours by calling the toll-free helpline 14447 to initiate compensation claims.

As unpredictable weather patterns continue to challenge agriculture, farmers in Kangra are now keeping a close eye on the skies, hoping for clear weather in the crucial days ahead.
