In a major infrastructure boost for Himachal Pradesh, the much-used Palampur–Nagri–Yol–Sheela Chowk road is all set for a transformation. Backed by funding from the World Bank, this 30-kilometre stretch connecting Palampur to Dharamsala could soon offer smoother, faster, and safer travel for thousands of daily commuters.
For locals in Kangra district, this isn’t just another road project—it’s a long-awaited upgrade that could change daily life. Whether it’s office-goers rushing to Dharamsala, tourists exploring the scenic hills, or transporters moving goods, everyone stands to benefit.
According to officials from the Public Works Department (PWD), the project has already received administrative approval and is moving ahead steadily. A consultant has been appointed to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR), which will define everything from design to cost and execution timelines.
At the same time, environmental responsibility is also being taken seriously. An international agency has been brought in to conduct an environmental impact assessment, ensuring that the development remains sustainable and eco-friendly—something crucial for a sensitive hill region like Kangra.
What Will Change?
The existing road will be upgraded into a modern double-lane corridor with a width of 25 metres. This means:
- Better road quality and smoother driving experience
- Proper drainage systems to prevent waterlogging
- Retaining walls and slope stabilisation for hill safety
- Modern safety features like guardrails and clear signage
For commuters, the biggest relief will be reduced traffic congestion and fewer delays. The improved road is also expected to significantly lower accident risks on this busy route.
Travel Time to Drop Significantly
Currently, traveling between Palampur and Dharamsala can be time-consuming, especially during peak hours. But once the upgrade is complete, the journey could take just around 30 minutes—a major improvement that will save both time and fuel.
A Boost for Tourism & Economy
This road is more than just a connection—it’s a lifeline for tourism and trade. With Dharamsala being a global tourist hotspot and Palampur known for its tea gardens and scenic beauty, better connectivity is expected to attract more visitors and boost local businesses.
