In a significant development for local governance in Himachal Pradesh, the Kangra administration has officially announced the reservation roster for councillor seats in the Municipal Councils of Nurpur and Jawali. The decision, finalized through a transparent draw of lots on Saturday, is expected to shape the upcoming municipal elections in the region.

The process was carried out under the provisions of Rule 10 of the Himachal Pradesh Municipal Election Rules, 2015, ensuring fairness and compliance with legal norms.

🌟 Women Representation Takes Center Stage

One of the most notable highlights of the new roster is the strong emphasis on women’s representation.

In Nurpur Municipal Council, 5 out of 9 wards have been reserved for women. These include Wards 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7. This move is being seen as a step forward in encouraging greater participation of women in grassroots politics.

Meanwhile, in Jawali Municipal Council, women have been allocated 5 out of 11 wards—specifically Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, and 10—highlighting a similar push toward inclusive governance.

📊 Category-Wise Reservation Details

In Nurpur:

  • Wards 5 and 8 fall under the general category
  • Ward 9 has been reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates

In Jawali:

  • Wards 5, 7, 9, and 11 are under the general category
  • Ward 6 is reserved for an SC woman
  • Ward 8 is reserved for an SC candidate

🏙️ Jawali’s Civic Expansion

Jawali has undergone a major administrative transformation recently. Upgraded from a Nagar Panchayat to a Municipal Council last year, the civic body has expanded from 9 to 11 wards.

This expansion includes the merger of nearby gram panchayats Dann and Keharian, now designated as Wards 10 and 11. The move reflects the growing urban footprint of the region and the need for stronger civic infrastructure.

🏛️ Political and Administrative Context

Jawali was originally established as a Nagar Panchayat in 2016 during the previous Congress government. Its recent upgrade to a Municipal Council was carried out by the current state government, reportedly on the initiative of local MLA and Agriculture & Animal Husbandry Minister Chander Kumar.

In another related development, the state government has also upgraded the nearby Nagrota Surian gram panchayat to a Nagar Panchayat, indicating a broader push toward urbanization in the area.
