In a much-needed relief for the hospitality sector, Himachal Pradesh has decided to increase the supply of commercial LPG cylinders by 20%. The move is expected to significantly ease the burden on hotels, restaurants, and small roadside dhabas that have been struggling with fuel shortages in recent weeks.
According to a notification issued by the Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, the increased allocation will benefit several priority sectors. These include hotels, restaurants, dhabas, food processing units, dairy-based subsidised canteens, as well as institutions like hospitals and educational centers.
Currently, around 6,000 commercial LPG cylinders are sold daily in the state by oil marketing companies. With the revised allocation, an additional 20% supply will be ensured, making more cylinders available for daily use and reducing the pressure on businesses dependent on LPG.
One of the biggest beneficiaries of this decision will be the hospitality sector. Hotels, restaurants, and dhabas will now receive around 1,000 cylinders per day—double the earlier allocation of 500 cylinders that was set on March 16. This sharp increase is expected to stabilize operations, especially for small business owners who rely entirely on LPG.
Industry voices have welcomed the move. Mohinder Seth, President of the Shimla Hotel and Tourism Stakeholders Association, described the increased supply as a “big relief” for hoteliers. He highlighted that many businesses had been forced to partially switch to alternative fuels due to the shortage, which often increased operational costs and affected efficiency.
For small dhaba owners, the situation had been even more challenging. Unlike larger establishments, they often lack the resources to shift to alternative fuel sources. The enhanced LPG supply will help them continue their operations smoothly without additional financial strain.
Overall, this decision is expected to bring stability to Himachal’s hospitality and food service sector, ensuring uninterrupted services for both locals and tourists. As tourism continues to play a key role in the state’s economy, such measures could help maintain service quality while supporting small and medium businesses.
