In 2025 alone, residents across the state lost a shocking 132 crore to cyber fraud, revealing just how deeply online scams have penetrated everyday life. While authorities managed to freeze around 29 crore, a large portion of the stolen money is still beyond recovery—leaving thousands of victims struggling.

What’s even more concerning is the rapid rise in cybercrime cases over the past few years. In 2023, around 8,077 complaints were reported. This number jumped to 12,249 in 2024, and by 2025, it surged dramatically to 18,706 cases.

This isn’t just a statistic—it’s a clear warning that cybercriminals are becoming more active, more organised, and far more dangerous.

🚨 How Are People Being Scammed?

Cyber fraud today is no longer limited to simple tricks. Scammers are using advanced and highly convincing methods to trap victims:

  • Fake “digital arrest” threats
  • Phishing links that steal personal data
  • Fraudulent investment schemes promising high returns
  • Work-from-home and job scams
  • Fraud via apps like WhatsApp and Telegram
  • UPI and QR code scams
  • OTP theft leading to bank account access
  • Social media impersonation

Many victims don’t even realise they’re being scammed until it’s too late.

🤖 AI Is Making Scams Even More Dangerous

According to Additional SP Narveer Singh Rathour, cybercrime has evolved into a “Crime-as-a-Service” model. This means criminals now work in organised networks, using rented tools, stolen databases, and professional strategies.

Even more alarming is the role of artificial intelligence.

Fraudsters can now:

  • Clone voices of family members or officials
  • Create deepfake videos
  • Send highly personalised scam messages

These tactics make scams look incredibly real, making it harder for people to identify fraud.

🛡️ What Authorities Are Doing

To tackle this growing threat, Himachal Pradesh Police has stepped up efforts:

  • Setting up dedicated cybercrime police stations
  • Creating specialised cyber cells
  • Promoting the 1930 cybercrime helpline
  • Running awareness campaigns in schools and rural areas
  • Training officers in digital forensics and financial tracking

These steps aim to not only catch criminals but also prevent people from becoming victims in the first place.

⚠️ A Wake-Up Call for Everyone

The sharp rise in cyber fraud cases is a reminder that anyone can become a target—whether young, old, tech-savvy, or not.

Staying alert, verifying unknown links, and avoiding “too good to be true” offers can go a long way in protecting yourself.

Because in today’s digital world, one small mistake can cost a lifetime of savings.
