After weeks of dry weather, Himachal Pradesh is likely to witness a significant change in weather conditions. According to the Meteorological Department, rain and snowfall are expected to return to the state between March 7 and March 10 due to the impact of an incoming Western Disturbance.

The weather across the state is expected to remain clear on March 5 and March 6, but conditions may begin to change from March 7 onwards. Light to moderate snowfall is likely in the higher altitude regions between March 7 and March 9, while rain may also occur in several central and plain areas on March 10.

One of the Driest Winters in Decades

This winter has been unusually dry in Himachal Pradesh. February passed with almost no rainfall, and the beginning of March has also remained largely dry.

Data from the Meteorological Centre in Shimla shows that the state recorded only 103.2 mm of rainfall during the entire winter season, which is about 45 percent below normal. According to long-term records dating back to 1901, this winter ranks as the 22nd driest winter in the state’s history.

Historical records show that the lowest winter rainfall was recorded in 1902 at 33.6 mm, while the highest was in 1954 with 468.3 mm.

Temperatures Rising Across the State

At present, clear skies and bright sunshine are pushing daytime temperatures higher across Himachal Pradesh. In the plains, people have already started feeling the effect of a mild early heat wave.

The minimum temperature across the state is currently about 3.6°C above normal. Interestingly, the hill capital Shimla is experiencing warmer nights than several cities in the plains.

On Wednesday, Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 13.6°C, which is around 7.5°C higher than normal for this time of year.

Temperatures Across Major Cities

Several parts of the state reported the following minimum temperatures:

  • Sundernagar: 8.2°C
  • Bhuntar: 7.2°C
  • Kalpa: 5.6°C
  • Dharamshala: 10.5°C
  • Una: 11.0°C
  • Nahan: 13.1°C
  • Keylong: -0.2°C
  • Palampur: 11.0°C
  • Solan: 9.3°C
  • Manali: 5.4°C
  • Kangra: 12.2°C
  • Mandi: 9.0°C
  • Bilaspur: 11.0°C
  • Dalhousie: 13.7°C
  • Jubbarhatti: 13.4°C

Meanwhile, colder conditions continued in some high-altitude areas:

  • Kukumseri: -3.7°C
  • Tabo: -0.2°C
  • Sarahan: 6.9°C

Among warmer locations, Neri recorded 15.7°C, while Paonta Sahib and Dehra Gopipur recorded 14.0°C.

Rainfall Deficit Remains High

Meteorological officials said the state did receive good snowfall in higher areas and rainfall in the plains during the second half of January, but the weather remained mostly dry afterward, except for the first week of February.

In February 2026, the state recorded only 15.7 mm of rainfall, compared to the normal average of 101.8 mm, marking a massive 85 percent rainfall deficit.

However, January rainfall was slightly above normal, with 88.8 mm recorded against the normal 85.3 mm.

With the expected rain and snowfall between March 7 and 10, weather experts hope the upcoming system may help reduce the rainfall deficit and bring much-needed moisture to the region.
