The week-long International Mandi Shivratri Fair concluded on a spiritually uplifting and culturally vibrant note, bringing together thousands of devotees, artists, and visitors in a celebration that beautifully blended faith, tradition and community spirit.

Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla presided over the closing ceremony on Sunday, marking the culmination of one of Himachal Pradesh’s most significant religious and cultural festivals. Accompanied by his wife Janaki Shukla, the Governor participated wholeheartedly in the sacred rituals and traditional events that define this historic fair.

A Day Rooted in Faith and Tradition

The day began with the Governor offering prayers at the revered Madhorai Temple, followed by his participation in the traditional Shobha Yatra. He later visited the Mata Bhimakali premises for Devludham and offered obeisance at the sacred Shri Raj Madhav Rai Temple.

One of the most cherished highlights was the centuries-old ‘Jaleb’ procession led by Shri Raj Madhav Rai. Wearing traditional turbans, the Governor and his wife greeted devotees with warmth and humility, reflecting the true spirit of togetherness that defines the festival.

More Than a Festival — A Living Heritage

Addressing the gathering, Governor Shukla described Shivratri not just as a religious occasion but as a powerful symbol of penance, devotion and inner strength. He spoke about Lord Shiva as the embodiment of both creation and destruction, explaining how the Trishul represents truth, righteousness and justice, while the Damru signifies the eternal rhythm of the universe.

He also emphasized the deeper meaning of devotion in today’s world — respect for nature and responsible living. Referring to Lord Shiva as Vishwanath, he reminded the audience that protecting the environment is not separate from worship, but an essential part of it.

Mandi: The ‘Choti Kashi’ of Himachal

Popularly known as “Choti Kashi” for its ancient temples and spiritual heritage, Mandi once again showcased why it holds such a special place in the cultural heart of the state. The Governor praised the town’s 500-year-old legacy and appreciated initiatives like heritage walks, literary gatherings, and cultural programs that celebrated its rich history.

This year’s fair also introduced new attractions that drew significant attention, including the Beas Aarti near Panchvaktra Temple, spectacular laser shows narrating Mandi’s history, international cultural troupe performances, the first ‘Chhoti Kashi Literature Festival,’ Saras Mela and dedicated platforms promoting women entrepreneurs.

A Grand Spiritual Gathering

More than 200 deities participated in the celebrations, enhancing the spiritual aura and grandeur of the event. The district administration was commended for preserving the ancient Jaleb tradition while ensuring seamless arrangements for pilgrims, visiting deities and performers.

Students of Saraswati Vidya Mandir presented a devotional dance performance dedicated to Lord Shiva, adding a heartfelt artistic touch to the closing ceremony.

Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan welcomed the dignitaries and provided an overview of the week-long festivities. The fair officially concluded when Governor Shukla ceremonially handed over the Shivratri Mahotsav flag to the mela committee chairman.

Former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, along with several MLAs and dignitaries, also graced the occasion.

Why This Festival Matters

The International Mandi Shivratri Fair is more than an annual event — it is a living expression of devotion, cultural pride and collective identity. As chants echoed through the valley and traditions passed from one generation to the next, the fair once again reminded everyone that faith and heritage continue to shape the soul of Himachal Pradesh.
