Medical Milestone: Mandi Doctor Removes 5.21-kg Fibroid Uterus Through Purely Laparoscopic Surgery

In a significant medical achievement, a doctor in Mandi has successfully removed a 5.21-kg fibroid uterus—equivalent in size to a full-term pregnancy—through a purely laparoscopic procedure, marking one of the largest such cases ever managed using minimally invasive surgery in India.
The patient, a woman suffering from progressive abdominal distension, heavy menstrual bleeding and severe pressure symptoms, had been living with the massive uterine fibroid for several years, severely affecting her quality of life.
Given the extraordinary size of the uterus, surgical intervention was unavoidable. Following detailed clinical evaluation, meticulous pre-operative planning and risk assessment, a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach was selected, despite the technical challenges typically associated with such large fibroid uteri.
The surgery was performed at Mandav Hospital, Gutkar, by Dr Uday Bhanu Rana, Consultant Gynaecologist and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon. The complex procedure lasted nearly three hours and involved significant challenges, including severely distorted pelvic anatomy, limited operative space and markedly increased vascularity, all of which substantially increase surgical risk.
Advanced 3D laparoscopic vision, precise dissection and step-wise devascularisation techniques were employed to ensure patient safety. The surgery was completed without any intra-operative or post-operative complications, and the patient is reported to be recovering well.
Laparoscopic removal of a fibroid uterus of this magnitude is considered exceedingly rare. According to available medical literature, the largest fibroid uterus previously removed laparoscopically in India weighed approximately 4.5 kg. At 5.21 kg, this case places Dr Rana’s procedure among the largest fibroid uteri ever removed through a purely laparoscopic approach.
Dr Rana was assisted by Dr Priyanka Sharma, Dr Anshit Pathania, nurses Shivani Sharma and Harshita Sharma, and OT assistants Mahesh and Jatin.
