Shimla News : Shimla’s Christ Church to enact birth of Jesus in Pahadi dialect this Christmas
Christ Church in Shimla will stage a unique Christmas enactment of Jesus Christ’s birth in the Pahadi dialect, blending Himachali culture with Christian traditions.
Blending the rich cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh with the spirit of Christmas, the iconic Christ Church in Shimla is set to stage a unique enactment of the birth of Jesus Christ this year. What makes the presentation special is that the entire manger scene will be performed by women in the local Pahadi dialect.
This will be the first time that a nativity enactment at the historic church is presented in Pahadi. The performers will wear traditional Himachali attire, offering a distinctive fusion of local culture and Christian traditions. As part of the celebrations, a special Pahadi natti dance, also performed by women, has been included in the programme.
Speaking to The Tribune, Anita Roy, priest in-charge of Christ Church, said the church would remain open on Christmas Day and host a series of religious and cultural events, including carolling, Bible readings, sermons and special programmes for children. The celebrations will conclude with a community feast.
She said the church was being beautifully decorated and rehearsals for the Christmas performances were currently underway.
“Carolling rounds began in the first week of December. During these rounds, we visit nearby houses, sing carols and offer prayers. The carolling will continue till Christmas,” Roy said.
She added that a Christmas tree programme was organised on December 18, during which children performed skits and Christmas plays and sang carols. Gifts were also distributed among the children.
A candlelight service was held on December 20 and witnessed participation from a large number of tourists visiting Shimla from different parts of the country.
Roy further said that the Christmas Eve midnight service would be held earlier this year, starting at 5.30 pm, to allow more devotees and visitors to attend and offer prayers.
In addition, special Bible readings and prayers for peace, hope, love and joy for the country and the state will be offered during the celebrations.
