Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Congress, accusing the party of indulging in “anti-national” activities and facilitating the settlement of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Assam.

Addressing a public rally after inaugurating a Rs 10,601-crore fertiliser plant at Namrup in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, the Prime Minister alleged that the Congress had failed to modernise the old fertiliser unit or address the long-standing problems faced by farmers.

“The Congress is indulging in anti-national activities. They want illegal Bangladeshi immigrants to settle in Assam,” Modi alleged.

He claimed that the opposition party was indifferent to the identity, existence and cultural pride of the Assamese people, which he said the BJP government was committed to safeguarding.

“The Congress is opposing the revision of voter lists because it only wants to grab power. They oppose every good initiative. The BJP government will always work to protect the identity, land, pride and existence of the people of Assam,” the Prime Minister asserted.

Modi said the BJP-led government was working to restore Assam’s historical prominence, comparable to its stature during the Ahom dynasty. He highlighted that industrialisation and improved connectivity were driving the state’s development and opening new opportunities for the youth.

“The double-engine government of the BJP is empowering the youth to dream big and realise their aspirations,” he said.

Referring to the Namrup urea plant, Modi said it would significantly benefit local farmers and generate thousands of employment opportunities. He criticised the Congress for not modernising the fertiliser facility during its tenure.

“It is unfortunate that no efforts were made earlier to upgrade the Namrup plant or resolve farmers’ issues. This fertiliser plant will now become a symbol of the country’s industrial growth,” he said.

The Prime Minister stressed that India’s progress was closely linked to farmers’ prosperity and said the BJP government had introduced several schemes to strengthen the agricultural sector.

“Many fertiliser plants were shut down during the Congress rule. After coming to power, the BJP government has established new fertiliser units across the country,” Modi said.

He also said the Centre’s palm oil mission would help the northeastern states achieve self-sufficiency in edible oil production while boosting farmers’ incomes in the coming years.
