IGMC Shimla Goes Paperless: Surgery Unit Switches to Fully Digital Patient Records
IGMC Shimla has begun transitioning to a paperless system, with its Surgery Unit-1 now fully operating through the HMIS portal. Patients will receive digital discharge slips, medical records, lab reports, and prescriptions.
The Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) and Hospital in Shimla is set to transition fully to digital operations, with the surgery unit already becoming paper-free as part of the initiative. Acting on the directions of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the hospital has begun replacing paper-based processes with modern digital tools to deliver more efficient, transparent and patient-friendly healthcare services.
An IGMC spokesperson said that all clinical and administrative functions of Surgery Unit-1 will now be managed through the Health Management Information System (HMIS) portal. As part of the shift, patients will receive digital discharge slips and treatment summaries, while medical records such as case sheets, lab reports, diagnostic results, prescriptions, medication charts, follow-up instructions and referrals will also be issued digitally.
Alongside the surgery unit, IGMC is rolling out a structured digital transformation across all departments. Under this broader initiative, all ancillary and support services will be integrated into the HMIS portal, paving the way for a fully paperless hospital system.
