Speeding Taxi Crashes Into Railing in Shimla, Injuring Several Including Infant Sleeping on Footpath
A speeding taxi crashed into a railing in central Shimla on Monday night, injuring a family sleeping on the footpath — including a four-month-old baby.
Police said the accident occurred around 10 p.m. between the Victory Tunnel and the old bus stand, when the vehicle lost control and struck the railing.
Five people — identified as Bhairi (22), Sona, Vishal, Maya (aged 4, 8, and 6), and infant Kishan — were injured in the incident. All were initially taken to Indira Gandhi Medical College Hospital and later referred to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital for further treatment.
According to police, the family, originally from Rajasthan, makes a living by selling balloons and had been sleeping on the footpath when the accident occurred.
In his complaint, a family member named Kailash said the white taxi was speeding when it hit the railing, causing it and an attached signboard to collapse onto the sleeping family.
Police have taken the driver into custody and are investigating the incident.
