A temporary shelter near Lakkar Bazaar was damaged, injuring one person

Shimla experienced significant disruption today as heavy rainfall triggered multiple landslides, leaving at least one person injured and forcing the evacuation of 25 others from their homes. Fortunately, there have been no reported fatalities so far.

According to reports, a temporary dwelling near Lakkar Bazaar was damaged in a landslide, injuring its occupant. The injured individual was immediately transported to Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) and Hospital for treatment.

Additionally, around 11 families living near Chaura Maidan were shifted to a community hall after their homes were deemed at serious risk due to the landslides and torrential rain. Several vehicles parked along the roads in areas such as Himland, near Bishop Cotton School, and Tutikandi were also damaged.

The heavy rain and landslides caused major road blockages across the city during the morning hours, resulting in long traffic jams. Students and office-goers faced severe inconvenience as they remained stuck for hours, with many forced to walk to their destinations. In the evening, another landslide near Panthaghati further endangered residential areas.

Oshin Sharma, the SDM of Shimla (Urban), stated that after receiving reports of the landslides, teams from the district administration, police, and other relevant departments rushed to Lakkar Bazaar to rescue the injured person and assist those affected. Road clearance operations are currently underway.

She added, “Machines have been deployed at the site to clear the debris from the road, which was reopened to traffic after a few hours. Several fallen trees have been removed, and dangerous trees hanging precariously have been cut down to ensure safety.”

The SDM further mentioned that tarpaulins have been provided to buildings near the affected areas in Panthaghati to prevent further damage. An assessment of the total losses is ongoing, and relief measures are being extended to those impacted by the disaster.
