Shimla, July 11:
Amid relentless monsoon rainfall, Himachal Pradesh experienced mild earthquake tremors on Friday morning, triggering brief panic among residents. The tremors were felt around 6:23 AM in Chamba district and nearby areas. According to the Shimla Meteorological Centre, the earthquake measured 3.5 on the Richter scale with its epicenter located at 32.36°N latitude and 76.18°E longitude, at a depth of 5 km below the surface.

The State Disaster Management Authority confirmed that no loss of life or property was reported due to the low intensity of the quake. Chamba has experienced several such tremors in the past, but they have rarely resulted in significant damage.

Himachal Pradesh lies in the highly earthquake-prone Zones IV and V. Historically, the region has seen devastating seismic activity, notably the 1905 Kangra earthquake, which claimed over 10,000 lives. Recurrent mild tremors in recent years have increased public anxiety and concerns over preparedness.

Heavy Rainfall Alert Continues

Meanwhile, the monsoon continues to wreak havoc across the state. The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in several districts through July 16. Overcast skies and intermittent rainfall were recorded on Friday in Shimla and other regions, following overnight showers at multiple locations.

The monsoon arrived early in Himachal on June 20, and since then, the state has recorded 23% more rainfall than average in July. So far, 91 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents. The Mandi district remains the worst affected, especially after 12 cloudburst events on the night of June 30, which led to massive destruction. Mandi alone has reported 21 deaths, with 27 people still missing.

Government Urges Caution

The state government and disaster management authorities have urged residents to avoid rivers, streams, and vulnerable areas during adverse weather. With the monsoon still in full force, officials emphasize the need for heightened vigilance in the coming days to prevent further loss of life and property.
