Anniversary Turns to Tragedy: Mother and Daughter Killed by Falling Tree in Manikaran Valley

What began as a joyful family getaway to the scenic Manikaran Valley turned into an unimaginable tragedy for a Ludhiana-based family. Avinash Kaur and her daughter Nishu Verma were killed on Saturday when a tree suddenly fell on them as they paused by the Parvati River after visiting the revered Manikaran Sahib Gurdwara.
The six-member family had travelled to Kullu to celebrate a special occasion—Avinash Kaur and her husband Gurbachan Singh’s wedding anniversary, which they had marked just a day earlier on Friday. A small celebration, including cake cutting, was planned for Saturday with their daughter Nishu and son-in-law Rajan Kumar. But fate had other plans.
A Brief Pause That Turned Fatal
The incident occurred near Sumaropa, as the family was returning from the gurdwara and decided to take a brief rest by the riverside to soak in the peaceful surroundings. Within moments, a large tree came crashing down, tragically striking Avinash and Nishu. Both died on the spot.
In one devastating moment, Gurbachan Singh lost both his wife and daughter, a loss that left not just the family but everyone present in stunned silence. The emotional weight of the scene brought tears to the eyes of witnesses and passersby.
Post-mortem was completed at Kullu Regional Hospital late Saturday night, after which the bodies were sent back to Ludhiana for last rites.
