Himachal Police Officer Sanjeev Kumar Recommended for Police Medal for Gallantry after Heroic Act

Shimla, March 28: In a display of extraordinary courage and dedication, Police Protection Officer (PSO) constable Sanjeev Kumar, a member of the Himachal Pradesh Police, has been recommended for the prestigious Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG). The recommendation comes after his brave actions during a deadly attack on former MLA Bumber Thakur on March 14, when he risked his own life to protect the MLA and prevent a major tragedy.

Sanjeev Kumar, a resident of Lower Nihal Sector in Bilaspur, is being hailed as a hero for his actions on that fateful day. While on duty, Kumar was assigned the responsibility of protecting Bumber Thakur. When the attackers opened fire on the former MLA during the Holi festivities, Kumar displayed incredible bravery by immediately taking charge of the situation. Without a moment’s hesitation, he placed himself between the attackers and Thakur, absorbing two bullets while managing to neutralize the threat and safeguard the MLA’s life.

In recognition of his exceptional bravery, the Himachal Pradesh Police has recommended Kumar for the Police Medal for Gallantry, a prestigious award given by the Government of India to police personnel who demonstrate extraordinary courage in the line of duty. The recommendation is now being processed, and it is expected that Kumar’s name will soon be among those honored for their acts of valor in service to the nation.

A Decade of Service and Dedication

Sanjeev Kumar’s bravery comes as no surprise to those who know him. Having joined the Himachal Pradesh Police in 2011, Kumar has built a reputation for himself as a committed and courageous officer. With more than a decade of service under his belt, he has consistently shown exceptional quick decision-making abilities and a deep commitment to safeguarding the people under his protection. Kumar has been posted in Bilaspur district since 2016 and has served in various capacities with honesty and diligence.

Due to his exemplary service and sharp instincts, Kumar was entrusted with the task of protecting former MLA Bumber Thakur. This trust was tested during the deadly attack, where Kumar’s quick actions and sharp focus ensured that Thakur was kept safe despite the dangerous situation.

The Courageous Act

In an emotional recount of the incident, Sanjeev Kumar shared his thoughts on the attack. “I never let the name of my department get tarnished. My main motive was to protect Sahab (Bumber Thakur) and to save him even if I had to sacrifice my life for it,” he said. Despite being injured by two gunshots, Kumar continued to act swiftly, pushing the MLA out of harm’s way and returning fire at the attackers. His decision to prioritize Thakur’s safety, even at the cost of his own life, ultimately saved both their lives.

“I could have easily killed the shooters by firing from the side, but I knew it would take time, and in that time, Sahab could have been shot. My priority was always to protect him,” he added, highlighting the selflessness and commitment that defines his service.

Support and Recognition

In recognition of his bravery, the Himachal Pradesh IPS Association has announced financial assistance of Rs 25,000 for Kumar’s medical expenses and recovery. The amount is a token of gratitude for his heroism and commitment to duty.

As the process to send his recommendation for the Police Medal for Gallantry begins, Sanjeev Kumar’s courage and devotion to duty have not only earned him the respect of his colleagues but also the admiration of the entire state.
