Snow Festival Kicks Off in Lahaul Spiti with Focus on Women Empowerment
Keylong, March 22, 2025: The second phase of the much-awaited Snow Festival in the tribal district of Lahaul Spiti commenced with a strong emphasis on women empowerment and cultural preservation. The two-day festival, held near the petrol pump at Tandi Sangam Ghat, attracted a large number of local residents and tourists alike, marking a celebration of the region’s rich heritage and potential for tourism growth.
The inaugural event saw Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul Spiti, Rahul Kumar, addressing the gathering as the chief guest. Also present at the ceremony was Superintendent of Police Ilma Afroz, who praised the event’s inclusivity and the vital role of women in the festival and community activities.
In his address, Rahul Kumar emphasized the central theme of the Snow Festival—women empowerment. “The primary objective of this festival is to highlight the strength and contribution of women in our society. Through this event, we aim to empower women by providing them with opportunities for self-employment and showcasing their talents in various fields,” he stated. He also reiterated the festival’s role in promoting tourism, encouraging visitors to explore the region’s picturesque landscapes and rich cultural heritage.
Kumar explained that the festival would also serve as a platform for increasing tourism-related activities, with a particular focus on preserving and promoting the district’s unique culture. “The aim is to strengthen the tourism sector and expand its capacity to create more avenues for local employment,” he added.
A key initiative introduced at the festival was the promotion of local products from the district, which have been listed on the Himira site of the state government for better market visibility. In addition, efforts are underway to secure Geographical Indication (GI) tags for several local products, which would further enhance their marketability. “Our goal is to ensure that these products have a separate identity and recognition,” said Kumar.
To further promote Lahaul Spiti as a tourist destination, the Deputy Commissioner informed the gathering about the launch of the Discover Lahaul Spiti website. The platform aims to provide detailed information about the district’s various tourist spots, enabling visitors to plan their trips effectively and conveniently.
In a heartfelt appeal to the youth of the region, Kumar encouraged them to engage in sports activities and lead a healthy lifestyle, urging them to steer clear of drug addiction, which has become a growing concern in many parts of the state.
Superintendent of Police Ilma Afroz also took the stage to acknowledge the significant contributions of women in the festival. “Women are at the forefront of this event, showcasing their skills through cultural performances and involvement in organizing various activities,” Afroz noted. Her support for women’s involvement in the event was a key highlight of the inaugural ceremony.
Throughout the festival, local Mahila Mandals (women’s groups) and Yuvak Mandals (youth groups) set up stalls featuring local cuisines, and colorful cultural programs were presented by school children and other community members. Visitors enjoyed the variety of food, music, and dance performances, while also learning about the region’s rich cultural history.
Additionally, the event saw street plays organized by the Sahas organization, which worked to raise awareness about cleanliness and the importance of maintaining a clean environment.
Looking ahead, the second day of the Snow Festival on March 23 will feature a variety of programs at Tandi Sangam Ghat, including awards for the festival’s participants. The celebrations will culminate with a grand event at Triloki Nath on March 24.
The festival’s inauguration was attended by a range of local dignitaries, including SDM Keylong Rajneesh Sharma, Assistant Commissioner Sankalp Gautam, and several departmental officers. Hundreds of locals and tourists participated in the lively atmosphere, contributing to the success of the festival.
The Snow Festival in Lahaul Spiti not only showcases the district’s natural beauty but also serves as a vital platform for promoting women’s empowerment, tourism, and cultural preservation. It is poised to become an annual event that draws attention to the region’s unique offerings and highlights the strength of its community.
