Shimla, March 15: To curb child mortality, District Shimla, Health and Family Welfare Department has started Diarrhea and Pneumonia Control Fortnight from March 15 to March 27 under important activity. The programme covers children below five years of age and will also involve distribution of ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) and zinc tablets to more than 52,310 children in the district.

Dr Rakesh Pratap, the Chief Medical Officer of District Shimla stated that the initiative was part of the wider movement to prevent child death due to diarrhea and pneumonia, which ranked among health hazards faced by little children. The Health Department has already provided elaborate instructions to all block medical officers for making the campaign successful, he said.

During the fortnight, Asha workers will go home-to-home in all localities and provide ORS packets and zinc tablets to every child of five years or below. It’s important to note that this distribution will be accompanied by vital awareness campaigns, teaching people how to prevent waterborne diseases and pneumonia, which are common health issues in the region.

In an effort to encourage hygiene and cleanliness, ORS corners will also be established in all health institutions in the district. Apart from helping people to access essential medicines, these corners will be also be providing sites for educating people on the importance of washing your hands — a simple and very economical proven way through which you can prevent most of the communicable diseases.

Part of the success of this initiative hinges on community involvement, Dr. Pratap noted. He called on residents to cooperate fully with health workers and participate in the awareness programs so that the campaign reaches every child in need.

“We want to go door-to-door and ensure every pagopares (at least) until 5 years old gets this life-saving drug. It is necessary that this initiative succeeds heavily on behalf of the public. We need to come together to protect our children from preventable diseases and the high child mortality rates,” Dr. Pratap said.

The Health Department’s work is not only to provide relief immediately but also to inculcate awareness and responsibility on child health, sanitation and hygiene in the communities in a long-term approach.
