Snow Blankets Shimla and Upper Regions, Mercury Dips Below Zero
Shimla, December 27: Himachal Pradesh has once again transformed into a snow-covered paradise as fresh snowfall graces the mountainous regions. Tourist hotspots like Kufri, Narkanda, Kharapathar, Jubbal, Kotkhai, and Chaupal near Shimla experienced significant snowfall since morning, bringing joy to visitors but disrupting daily life in Upper Shimla. Over two inches of snow have accumulated in Narkanda, halting traffic on the Shimla-Rampur National Highway. Authorities have rerouted vehicles through Sunni, while light rain in Shimla city hints at more snow on the way.
In the plains, sporadic rainfall has been reported, further intensifying the winter chill.
Third Snowfall of December Marks a Promising Winter Season
This marks the third snowfall in December, following previous events on December 8 and December 23-24. The upper reaches of Shimla, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Mandi, and Chamba continue to see heavy snowfall, which has already caused road blockages and disrupted transportation.
The ongoing cold wave has gripped the state, with temperatures dipping drastically. Key locations recorded sub-zero temperatures, including Tabo in Lahaul-Spiti at -11°C, Kukumseri at -7.2°C, Samdho at -6.5°C, and Keylong at -6.4°C. Even Shimla and nearby areas are experiencing temperatures hovering just above freezing, with 5°C recorded in the capital.

The Meteorological Department has forecasted snow and rain across Himachal Pradesh on December 27, 28, and 29, with a brief respite expected on December 30 and 31. However, fresh snowfall is anticipated in the first week of January, coinciding with New Year celebrations.
This forecast has sparked a surge in tourist arrivals, with visitors eager to experience the snow-clad landscapes. Hoteliers and local businesses are expecting a boost as travelers flock to the region to enjoy the picturesque scenery and winter sports.

Road Closures and Disruptions
Despite the beauty, the heavy snowfall has caused significant logistical challenges. According to the State Emergency Operations Center, three national highways and 101 roads remain blocked as of Friday morning. These include NH-3 and NH-305 in Kullu district and NH-505 in Lahaul-Spiti.
Shimla district has been hit hardest, with 50 roads in areas like Kotkhai, Jubbal, Rohru, Rampur, and Chaupal rendered impassable. The authorities are working to clear the routes, but the severe weather conditions have delayed restoration efforts.
Tourism and Challenges
While the snowfall has boosted tourism, it also poses challenges for locals and visitors alike. Authorities have urged travelers to exercise caution and stay updated on road conditions before planning trips. As Himachal Pradesh revels in its winter charm, efforts are underway to ensure the safety and convenience of everyone navigating the snowy landscapes.
