Shimla : In a major boost to Shimla’s public transportation system, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated the newly constructed ₹13.25 crore Dhalli Bus Stand today. This modern facility is set to transform travel for residents of upper Shimla while helping alleviate the traffic congestion that has long plagued the city. Equipped with contemporary amenities, the bus stand aims to streamline travel and improve the overall commuter experience.

Overcoming Hurdles to Realize a Long-Awaited Project

At the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Sukhu spoke about the challenges faced during the development of the Dhalli Bus Stand. He emphasized that while the previous government had laid the foundation stone, it failed to allocate sufficient funds, causing delays in the project’s completion. “Our government ensured the release of ₹10 crore over two fiscal years to fast-track the construction and bring this project to fruition,” Sukhu stated. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure to meet the growing demands of the state’s residents.

Connecting Upper Shimla: A Hub for Commuters

The Dhalli Bus Stand promises to greatly benefit residents from areas like Mashobra, Kufri, Fagu, and beyond. By providing a dedicated hub for inter-district and inter-state bus services, the facility will reduce the dependency on Shimla’s crowded central bus stands, such as Old ISBT and Lakkar Bazar. Commuters have already welcomed the development, citing the ease it will bring to their daily journeys.

“This bus stand will make it so much easier for us to travel to upper Shimla without the hassle of getting stuck in city traffic,” said a resident from Kufri, expressing relief at the prospect of faster and more convenient travel options.

Alleviating Traffic Congestion in Shimla

One of the most immediate benefits of the Dhalli Bus Stand is the anticipated reduction in traffic congestion in central Shimla. By relocating bus operations to Dhalli, heavy vehicles will no longer need to pass through Shimla’s narrow and often gridlocked streets. This will ease bottlenecks and improve traffic flow, aligning with the government’s broader objective of enhancing urban mobility.

Furthermore, this shift is expected to significantly reduce vehicular emissions, contributing to a reduction in air pollution in Shimla’s city center. The Dhalli Bus Stand is part of a larger effort to make the region more accessible, cleaner, and more efficient.

Modernizing Public Transport for a Sustainable Future

In addition to the Dhalli Bus Stand, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri revealed exciting plans for further modernization of public transport in Himachal Pradesh. The Himachal Pradesh Transport Corporation (HRTC) has received approval for 250 new diesel buses, each with a seating capacity of 36-37 passengers. These buses are expected to be operational within the next month or so, providing much-needed relief to passengers and enhancing comfort for commuters.

Agnihotri also shared the news that the state has secured funding for the purchase of 300 electric buses, which will soon begin operations. The introduction of electric buses is a major step toward reducing the state’s carbon footprint and transitioning to more sustainable transport solutions. Additionally, 100 new tempo travelers will be introduced to improve last-mile connectivity, ensuring that even the remotest areas of the state are accessible.

A significant investment of over ₹100 crore has also been allocated for the creation of an electric vehicle station and a dedicated workshop, marking the state’s commitment to supporting eco-friendly and efficient transportation systems.

A Vision for Sustainable Mobility

With the Dhalli Bus Stand now in operation and a range of new transport initiatives on the horizon, Shimla’s public transportation infrastructure is undergoing a major transformation. These developments are designed to enhance mobility, reduce pollution, and ensure that both residents and tourists can move through Shimla more efficiently. The state government’s focus on modernizing the transport system with a combination of diesel and electric buses, along with other green initiatives, reflects its commitment to building a sustainable future for the region.

The Dhalli Bus Stand marks just the beginning of a broader vision to create a cleaner, more connected, and more efficient Shimla, improving the quality of life for its residents while ensuring a more sustainable and accessible future.
