Manali, December 1: In a crucial safety move, the administration has officially closed Rohtang Pass for tourist movement due to the formation of dangerous black ice on the roads. This decision was prompted by a growing concern for the safety of travelers, as freezing temperatures have created hazardous conditions on the pass. District Magistrate Ashwani Kumar issued the closure notification on Saturday, declaring that the pass will remain off-limits to tourists until after the winter season.

Black Ice Risk Prompts Timely Action

The formation of black ice, a thin and invisible layer of ice on the road, presents a severe risk to vehicles and pedestrians. According to a statement from SDM Manali Raman Kumar Sharma, a detailed inspection by local police, Border Roads Organization (BRO) officials, and the SDM revealed that the road conditions had become too perilous for safe passage. The freezing of water on the road at Rohtang Pass has significantly increased the likelihood of accidents, leading to the decision to shut the pass for tourist traffic.

In line with the closure, the online permit system for Rohtang Pass has been deactivated, preventing any further permits from being issued to visitors. Additionally, the Pukis police post at Madhi, a vital check-post for travelers, has been moved to Gulaba to enhance monitoring of traffic and ensure public safety.

Earlier Closure Due to Winter Conditions

While Rohtang Pass typically shuts down for the winter on November 15 due to snow and extreme weather, this year’s unusually clear weather allowed vehicular movement to continue until recently. However, with the drop in temperatures and the formation of ice, the road quickly became unsafe, prompting authorities to implement the closure sooner than expected.

“The freezing conditions have made the road extremely unsafe,” explained SDM Manali, Raman Kumar Sharma. “After an on-ground inspection, we recommended that the pass be closed immediately. The District Magistrate acted quickly to issue the notification for the safety of the public.”

Tourists Advised to Explore Alternative Destinations

With Rohtang Pass temporarily closed, the local administration is urging tourists to redirect their travel plans to other scenic locations in the region. Manali and its surrounding areas offer a wealth of alternative attractions, including Solang Valley, Old Manali, and Kullu, which are accessible and safe during the winter months.

Officials have also advised travelers planning trips to high-altitude destinations to check weather forecasts and road conditions regularly to ensure their safety. While Rohtang Pass remains inaccessible, the government is focusing on maintaining safety and providing assistance to those traveling through the region.

A Reminder of the Risks of High-Altitude Travel

The closure of Rohtang Pass serves as an important reminder of the risks associated with traveling in high-altitude areas during the winter. The challenging weather conditions and icy roads make it crucial for both locals and tourists to take adequate precautions. By taking early action to close the pass, authorities are prioritizing public safety over convenience, a decision that is expected to prevent potential accidents.

The Rohtang Pass will remain closed to tourists until the conditions improve, and authorities have assured that the pass will be reopened once the weather stabilizes and the risk of black ice is mitigated. Travelers are urged to plan their visits for the spring or summer season when the road conditions are safer for travel.

Looking Ahead: Safety as a Priority

As winter conditions intensify, the administration’s proactive approach to safety is commendable. The focus remains on ensuring that tourists and locals alike can enjoy the region’s beauty without facing unnecessary risks. Visitors to Manali and surrounding areas are encouraged to stay updated on road conditions and to heed the advice of local authorities to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

With this latest decision, Shimla’s district authorities have shown a commitment to protecting the public and preserving the safety of the popular Rohtang Pass, even in the face of challenging natural elements.
