Though the details of the meeting were not available immediately, it was more or less in the nature of a courtesy visit, highlighting some important issues concerning Himachal Pradesh, as raised by the Governor. This included matters related to its border areas, rural development, and matters of strategy.
Settlement and Rural Development in Border Areas Emphasized
In his previous interactions with the Prime Minister, especially in January, Governor Shukla emphasized the imperative nature of making provisions for a permanent settlement of people in the border areas of the state. Today, this came up again during the meeting on Thursday. The infrastructure has been emphasized by His Excellency the Governor. It is to be presented under the Vibrant Village Programme, through which long-pending problems, including migration and economic stagnation in remote rural areas, are to be solved.
Governor Shukla also emphasized the essence of upgrading the quality of living conditions of army men posted at strategic locations, to harmonize the welfare of defense forces with that of the people in the local community and as a wider objective to enhance security in the region, together with the well-being of the community.
Promoting Organic Farming and Addressing the Issue of Drug Addiction
During the conference with PM Modi, Governor Shukla requested the IM to include the promotion of natural farming in Himachal Pradesh as one of the promotional activities. The governor’s blanket of eco-friendly farming has to date been providing updates to the state on the efforts being made within the boundaries of the state to promote eco-friendly farming in place of chemical farming.
Also, Governor Shukla used this opportunity to brief the Prime Minister on the state’s anti-drug campaigns. The state of Himachal Pradesh has been facing the problem of drug related issues in particular it’s rural population the Governor pointed out the growing concern that the central government support is required to address this problem.
Vibrant Village Programme: Towards a Perspective of Enduring Development:
The discussions on Thursday were also dominated with the problems faced by the tribal districts and the Governor’s attempts to stop migration from these areas through the utilization of the Vibrant Village Programme. He placed emphasis on such areas that need to be further developed in these regions for achieving sustainability for the long run and development. The tribal districts of the state of the Governor’s having moved long distances away from the tribals for better opportunities have thrown numerous problems in their way like unavailability of basic facilities.
It was reported earlier that during his January visit, the governor had met Union home minister Amit Shah and discussed some of the critical issues of state, including promotion of natural farming in border areas and drug abuse counter measures. These interactions also show efforts of the Governor in continuing to present and push the agendas of Himachal Pradesh in the top most echelons of the NDA government.
Actively Forging Links Towards Development in Himachal Pradesh
The engagement with Modiji has been yet another important step in the cooperation between Himachal Pradesh and the central authorities. The relentless urge of Governor Shukla to develop the state and his regular meetings with important leaders at the national level demonstrate that he is serious about the state’s progress. By further pursuing such talks, the state is confident of bringing not only economic development but also scope for increased security, so that Himachal Pradesh is able to remain strong and prosperous regardless of the challenges ahead.
