Reported & Written By Kumud Sharma, Diary Times, Shimla, June 13 :The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Delhi government to approach the Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB) for water supply after the Himachal Pradesh government took a U-turn and told the Supreme Court that it has no surplus water left.
A vacation bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Prasanna B Varale asked the Delhi government to apply to the Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB) by 5 pm for supplying water to the national capital on humanitarian grounds.
The Himachal Pradesh government told the Supreme Court that it does not have 136 cusecs of surplus water left for Delhi and withdrew its earlier statement.
The vacation bench said that the sharing of Yamuna water between states is a complex and sensitive issue and this court does not have the technical expertise to decide on it even on an interim basis.
The bench said, “This issue should be left to be considered by the body constituted by consent of the parties in the 1994 MoU. Since the UYRB has already directed Delhi to submit an application for supply of water on humanitarian grounds… if such an application has not already been made, it should be made by 5 pm today and the board will meet tomorrow and take a decision in the matter at the earliest.”
The apex court was hearing a plea filed by the Delhi government seeking direction to Haryana to release surplus water supplied by Himachal Pradesh to the national capital to mitigate its water crisis.
