Heavy rains of monsoon season had created a terrible havoc in Himachal Pradesh in the year 2023. More than four hundred and fifty people lost their lives due to the natural disaster and Himachal Pradesh has also suffered a huge loss of about thirteen thousand crore rupees during the natural disaster. Thousands of houses collapsed like a deck of cards, due to which lakhs of people have become completely homeless. People affected by natural disasters are still forced to live in other people’s houses. Thousands of cowsheds that were destroyed after collapse have not been rebuilt yet. Thousands of roads are still closed. The condition of the roads that have opened has become such that they are going to collapse again in the coming rainy season, taking the lives of many people.

After the natural disaster, dozens of hotels and home stays in Kullu and Manali were completely locked and thousands of people became unemployed. Despite all this happening, Himachal Pradesh has once again stood up strongly. After the roads were restored, tourists have once again started reaching Himachal Pradesh. For the first time after the natural disaster, more than five lakh tourists from outside states have reached Himachal Pradesh to visit on the Christmas festival.
Honourable Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Shri Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has distributed cheques worth crores of rupees as relief amount to the natural disaster affected people in Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Solan and Theog and all other districts.
With all the efforts of the Himachal Pradesh government, the wounds of the natural disaster have been healed by providing disaster relief funds, but the wounds of the natural disaster have not yet healed completely.
565 houses were completely damaged due to natural disaster in Kullu district-
The weather had completely wreaked havoc on Kullu Valley on 10th July. Due to which Manali, Parla Bhuntar, Manikaran and Sainj Valley have suffered huge losses due to terrible floods in Beas River and Parvati River. Five hundred sixty five houses have been completely damaged due to the heart-wrenching natural disaster in Kullu district, while two thousand four hundred thirty nine houses have suffered partial damage due to the natural disaster. Five hundred sixty nine cow sheds, five hundred seventy commercial premises, eighteen hundred fifty bighas of land suitable for agriculture and horticulture in Kullu district have been washed away. At seven places from Kullu to Palchan, 200 to 700 meters of highway was completely erased.
Now the highway till Kullu and Manali has once again been reopened by NHAI. The heart-wrenching severe flood that occurred on July 9 from Tandi drain in Thunag Bazaar had left thousands of people homeless. The houses built with their entire life’s savings were razed to the ground. Homeless people had to take shelter in the houses of their relatives. Sixty-nine houses in Thunag, Chhatri and Bagachanogi sub tehsils were completely damaged. Besides, one hundred and sixty-one houses have also been partially damaged. Forty-two shops and one hundred and two cow sheds have also fallen victim to the severe floods. Seven people had tragically died due to severe floods in Siraj Valley.
A total of twenty people died in the Summerhill Shiv Stepwell accident in Himachal Pradesh’s capital Shimla –
Twenty people died in the tragedy that took place on August 14 at the Shiv Bawadi temple in Summerhill area of Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh. Rescue operations were carried out for eleven days to pull out bodies from the debris. The bridge of the World Heritage Kalka-Shimla Heritage Railway Line below the Advanced Study had also fallen victim to the tragedy of natural disaster. Due to the collapse of the bridge of the World Heritage Kalka-Shimla Heritage Rail Line, the movement of trains was completely stopped for almost two months.
Heavy landslide in Chakki Mod also troubled the people, due to which the National Highway remained completely closed for several days –
People were badly affected as Kalka-Shimla National Highway 5 was closed near Chakki Mor due to heavy landslide. Even people walking on foot had to travel a distance of two kilometres. Milk supply from Punjab and Chandigarh was also badly affected. During the monsoon season, it became difficult to deliver apples to the fruit markets of outside states. Oil tankers and trucks were also stranded on the national highway for several days.
Apple growers suffered loss worth crores of rupees due to uprooting of thousands of plants –
Apple orchards in the capital Shimla, Mandi and Kullu districts have also suffered huge losses due to landslides caused by heavy rains. Thousands of apple trees were uprooted. In Kumarsain area of Shimla district itself, more than fifteen hundred plants were completely uprooted. Thousands of saplings of apple growers in Theog, Kotkhai, Jubbal, Rohru of Himachal Pradesh’s capital Shimla as well as in Chirgaon were completely damaged.
The flood due to cloudburst had taken the lives of five people along with innocent children –
Five members of the same family died tragically after being buried under the debris due to a cloud burst on the night of August 9 in Sirmauri Tal of Paonta Sahib sub-division. After the whole entire accident, only the son of the entire family survived, who was at some distance from the house at the time of the incident.
