Warnings on OTT Platforms : From May 31, health-related warnings will be written in front of scenes containing cigarettes and other tobacco products on the OTT platform as well. The Ministry has taken this decision after several rounds of consultations with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and people from the industry and other stakeholders.

On May 31, the ‘World No Tobacco Day’, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare plans to notify new rules under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003. ThePrint has received information about this. Under these rules, over-the-top (OTT) platforms or streaming services will be required to display health warnings during smoking scenes of actors.

According to the new rules, all web series and films with smoking scenes will need to show health warnings not only in the beginning but also in the middle when such scenes appear.
A senior health ministry official told ThePrint on condition of anonymity that the ministry took the decision after several rounds of consultations with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, industry people and other stakeholders.
