New Delhi: Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra on Thursday said India has deployed INS Tarkash, the third naval ship, for evacuation operations in conflict-torn Sudan.
The Foreign Secretary made the above remarks while addressing a media briefing by the Ministry of External Affairs on Operation Kaveri launched by the Government of India to rescue Indians stranded in conflict-torn Sudan.
“I am informed that the third ship INS Tarkash has also reached Port Sudan today as part of our efforts,” Kwatra said.
Briefing media persons on how the rescue operation is progressing in Sudan, the Foreign Secretary said, “Two naval ships have also been deployed as part of the Government of India’s efforts. Around 300 Indians will bring them to Port Jeddah tomorrow.” and today have returned to Port Sudan to pick up the next batch of Indians and bring them to safer ports.”
Kwatra said the Indian government is making several efforts to rescue Indians from Sudan, including setting up control rooms in India and Sudan as well.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a high-level meeting in which he personally reviewed and directed the Government of India officials to take appropriate measures to assist and bring back these stranded Indians,” Kwatra said.
The foreign secretary also said, “As part of our efforts, two C-130 aircraft of the Indian Air Force have been mobilized and continuously deployed in Jeddah, and have been there since April 19. We have also set up a control room in Jeddah. ” and a control room in Port Sudan. So we have two control rooms working with our embassy. So there is a complete triangulation of efforts between our consulate in Jeddah through the control room team in Port Sudan and the control room through the mission in Riyadh, which is the north-east coast of Sudan, and our embassy in Khartoum city. ”
“And of course, each of these three hubs is coordinating its efforts and direction with the headquarters in Delhi to bring back stranded Indians.”
Foreign Secretary Kwatra also briefed about the current situation in Sudan and the ceasefire. He said that ceasefire has been announced several times and many of them have not been respected.
“Sporadic firing has been reported. The situation on the ground remains highly volatile,” Kwatra said.
Speculating on how many Indians may be stranded in Sudan, Kwatra said, “Our estimate is around 3500 Indians. These are approximate numbers.”
He also said, “Specifically, I think 3000-odd have registered online. And roughly an additional 300 missions are in touch with embassies. The focus of the Government of India in this entire effort is to provide standard Indian citizens with advice and Helping has been on.”
The foreign secretary also said that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also contacted foreign ministers of other key partners whose citizens are also stranded in Sudan.
“These included the Foreign Ministers of the US, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and last night also had talks with the UK Foreign Ministers. It’s on the up and up. Sudan is witnessing violence due to fighting between the army and paramilitary forces.
The Khaleej Times reported that a 72-hour ceasefire was imposed in Sudan to calm the clashes after more than 400 people were killed.
