Berlin: The German Air Force announced on Wednesday that it had intercepted three Russian military aircraft flying over the Baltic Sea. Team Luftwaffe tweeted, “Reconnaissance aircraft intercepted. Germany and the UK #Eurofighter have been alerted to identify 3 military machines. Two Su-27 Flankers and an IL-20 from Russia have intercepted international flights over the Baltic Sea.” Again took off without a transponder signal in the airspace.” ,
German and British forces were deployed to identify two Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jets and one Ilyushin Il-20 aircraft.
It posted multiple pictures of the Russian plane in mid-flight.
Germany handed over responsibility for NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission to Britain earlier this month. NATO allies pitch in to protect the airspace there because Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia do not have fighter jets of their own.
Notably, Russian military aircraft regularly fly from mainland Russia to Kaliningrad and back, meaning such encounters are fairly regular in the area.
Security in the Baltic states has been beefed up since Russia invaded Ukraine last year.
Meanwhile, there are growing fears in Ukraine that Moscow is pressuring its close ally Belarus to take direct part in the fighting.
In recent months, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has relied on political and economic support from the Kremlin to help him deal with protests and mass arrests.
A Belarusian air defense unit was recently formed in Minsk, which is believed to house some of Moscow’s missile units.
