Manimahesh Yatra 2026: Daily Pilgrim Limit Set at 5,000, Kugti Parikrama Route Restricted

In the wake of last year’s devastating floods and the massive rescue operation during the Manimahesh Yatra, the Chamba administration has introduced several major safety measures for this year’s pilgrimage.

The annual pilgrimage to the sacred Manimahesh Lake will begin on August 25, while online registration and slot booking for devotees will open from August 1 through the official portal.

For the first time, the pilgrimage will be regulated through an e-pass system, similar to the arrangements followed during the Amarnath Yatra. Initially, around 5,000 pilgrims will be permitted to undertake the yatra each day.

The daily quota may be increased during Krishna Janmashtami and Radhashtami, depending on weather conditions, security arrangements and the carrying capacity of the pilgrimage route.

Safety Measures Introduced After Last Year’s Disaster

The decision to regulate the number of pilgrims follows the unprecedented situation witnessed during last year’s yatra. Continuous heavy rainfall triggered flash floods, damaged several stretches of the Chamba-Bharmour highway and left more than 15,000 pilgrims stranded.

The large-scale rescue operation involved the Army, Air Force, NDRF, SDRF and local volunteers, highlighting the serious challenges posed by the region’s difficult terrain and unpredictable weather.

To prevent a repeat of last year’s situation, the administration has decided to make registration and slot booking mandatory for all pilgrims.

Chamba Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repaswal said the system would help regulate pilgrim movement, prevent overcrowding and ensure a faster response in case of an emergency.

The administration will also focus on strict compliance with National Green Tribunal guidelines, particularly regarding scientific waste disposal and the prevention of single-use plastic during the pilgrimage.

Kugti Parikrama Route to Remain Restricted

Another major decision concerns the traditional parikrama route through Kugti village. The route will remain closed to pilgrims this year due to safety concerns.

However, devotees arriving from the Lahaul-Spiti side will be allowed to use the route, as it holds significant religious importance for them.

The decision comes after a tragic toll last year. Seventeen of the nearly two dozen deaths reported during the previous yatra occurred on the Kugti route, making safety concerns a key factor behind the restriction.

14-Km Trek to Sacred Manimahesh Lake

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Manimahesh Yatra is among the most revered Himalayan pilgrimages in North India.

Devotees traditionally undertake a challenging 14-kilometre trek from Hadsar to Manimahesh Lake, situated at an altitude of around 4,080 metres in the Pir Panjal range.

With online registration, daily pilgrim limits, drone surveillance and route restrictions being introduced, the administration is aiming to make this year’s Manimahesh Yatra safer, more organised and better prepared for emergencies.
