Iran on Monday began a major funeral procession in Tehran for its late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, marking one of the country’s most significant state ceremonies in recent years.

Khamenei’s flag-draped coffin, along with the coffins of family members who were reportedly killed in an airstrike on February 28 during the conflict involving Israel and the United States, was transported through the streets of the Iranian capital on a truck before heading toward Mehrabad International Airport.

Authorities expect a large public turnout as the government seeks to demonstrate national unity and public support during the mourning period. Iranian state television confirmed that the procession had officially commenced, while several roads, public spaces, and sections of Tehran’s airspace have been closed to facilitate the ceremonies.

The nationwide mourning period began on Saturday and is scheduled to continue until Thursday. Following the ceremonies in Tehran, Khamenei is expected to be laid to rest at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad, his birthplace. The late leader was 86 years old.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts involving the United States and Iran remain on pause. Discussions focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, addressing Iran’s nuclear program, and pursuing a long-term resolution to regional hostilities are expected to resume after the funeral proceedings conclude.

As mourning events continue, emotional scenes have emerged among participants, with some expressing strong calls for retaliation following Khamenei’s death. The funeral ceremonies are taking place against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East, drawing global attention to developments in the region.
