One of India’s most iconic mountain destinations has witnessed a significant slowdown in domestic tourism this year. Official data shows that domestic tourist arrivals in Lahaul-Spiti dropped by more than 53 percent in 2025, sparking concerns among local businesses and tourism stakeholders who depend heavily on visitor spending.

According to figures released by the tourism department, the tribal district welcomed 4,88,705 domestic tourists and 7,456 foreign visitors in 2025. In comparison, 2024 recorded 10,55,239 domestic tourists and 7,504 international visitors, highlighting a dramatic decline in Indian travellers while overseas interest remained largely unchanged.

Summer Season Continues to Drive Tourism

Despite the downturn, the summer season remained the peak travel period for the high-altitude destination. June emerged as the busiest month of 2025, attracting 1,75,952 domestic tourists and 2,249 foreign visitors.

May registered 81,512 domestic tourists and 485 international travellers, while April saw 59,398 domestic visitors alongside 102 foreign tourists.

However, these numbers were significantly lower compared to the same period in 2024. June last year alone recorded 2,91,486 domestic tourists, while May attracted 1,79,840 visitors. Similarly, April 2024 witnessed 1,47,711 domestic arrivals, more than double the figure reported during the corresponding month in 2025.

Changing Travel Trends Impact Tourist Numbers

Industry experts and tourism stakeholders attribute the decline to multiple factors, including evolving travel preferences, weather-related disruptions and increased competition from emerging destinations.

Lahaul-Spiti continues to remain among the most sought-after Himalayan travel destinations, but fluctuating road conditions, accessibility challenges and infrastructure concerns may have influenced travel decisions this year.

Travel operators believe that changing holiday patterns and a growing preference for alternative mountain destinations have also contributed to the decline in domestic footfall.

Foreign Tourist Interest Remains Strong

While domestic arrivals have dropped sharply, foreign tourist numbers have shown remarkable resilience. The district recorded its highest number of international visitors in June 2025, followed by July and October, indicating sustained global interest in the region’s unique landscapes, adventure tourism opportunities and cultural heritage.

The stability in foreign arrivals offers a positive sign for the tourism sector, even as local businesses continue to grapple with reduced domestic demand.

Economic Impact on Local Businesses

Tourism remains the backbone of Lahaul-Spiti’s economy, supporting hotels, homestays, transport operators, adventure tourism companies and small local enterprises.

The decline in visitor numbers has raised concerns among stakeholders who rely on seasonal tourism for their income and livelihoods.

Despite the slowdown, industry representatives remain optimistic about the future. They believe that improved road connectivity, enhanced tourism infrastructure and targeted promotional campaigns could help revive tourist arrivals and restore growth momentum in the coming years.

As authorities focus on strengthening travel infrastructure and visitor experiences, tourism stakeholders hope Lahaul-Spiti will regain its position as one of India’s most preferred mountain destinations.
