In a significant political development in Himachal Pradesh, the BJP-backed faction led by former MLA Arjun Thakur has secured a decisive victory in the Jawali Block Development Committee (BDC) elections. The result is being seen as a major boost for Thakur’s political influence in the Jawali Assembly constituency, currently represented by Congress MLA and Agriculture Minister Chander Kumar.
The elections concluded on Thursday with BJP-supported candidates Rajinder Singh and Madan Lal being elected as the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Jawali Block Development Committee, respectively.
Rajinder Singh and Madan Lal Elected Unopposed After Opposition Boycott
The election process required the support of at least 14 members out of the 26 newly elected BDC members to complete the voting.
However, supporters of the Congress party and the official BJP faction led by Sanjay Guleria chose to stay away from the election proceedings. Their absence cleared the path for the Arjun Thakur-backed candidates to secure both key leadership positions without facing significant opposition.
Political observers believe the boycott played a crucial role in determining the outcome of the election.
Another Political Win for Arjun Thakur Camp
The latest victory adds to the growing influence of Arjun Thakur’s supporters in the Jawali region.
Earlier, candidates backed by Thakur had also emerged victorious in three out of four Zila Parishad wards within the Jawali Assembly constituency. Following the BDC results, Arjun Thakur reached Jawali and congratulated the newly elected office bearers, calling the outcome a victory for the BJP-backed grassroots leadership.
Jawali Politics Continues to Witness BJP Factional Divide
The BDC election results once again highlighted the internal divisions within the BJP’s Jawali unit.
Arjun Thakur represented the BJP in the 2017 Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections, defeating senior Congress leader Chander Kumar by a margin of 8,213 votes. However, ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections, the party denied him a ticket and instead nominated Sanjay Guleria.
Guleria went on to contest against Chander Kumar but failed to retain the seat for the BJP, allowing the Congress leader to return to the Assembly.
Political Significance of the Jawali BDC Results
The Jawali BDC election outcome is expected to have wider political implications ahead of future local body and Assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh.
The victory strengthens Arjun Thakur’s position within the region and signals his continued influence among local BJP workers despite not being the party’s official candidate in the previous Assembly election. At the same time, the absence of both Congress and the rival BJP faction from the voting has intensified discussions about the evolving political equations in Jawali.
