In a significant diplomatic development, Qatar has once again expressed strong support for restarting negotiations between the United States and Iran, emphasizing that unresolved disputes should be addressed through dialogue, mediation, and peaceful engagement.
The statement came after the first round of technical discussions between the US and Iran, originally scheduled to be held in Switzerland, was postponed following the signing of a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at reducing tensions and ending hostilities in the West Asia region.
During a high-level meeting at the Burgenstock Resort in Switzerland on Friday, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, held discussions with Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis. The leaders reviewed bilateral relations, explored ways to enhance cooperation, and exchanged views on recent geopolitical developments in the Middle East.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry stated that Sheikh Mohammed reaffirmed Doha’s commitment to supporting direct negotiations between Washington and Tehran to achieve long-term solutions to outstanding issues.
The Qatari Prime Minister stressed that successful diplomatic engagement could strengthen regional security, reduce tensions, and create fresh opportunities for economic cooperation, development, and prosperity for people across the region.
Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis also underlined the importance of diplomacy, dialogue, and mediation in resolving complex international conflicts. In a statement shared after the meeting, he highlighted the shared commitment of Switzerland and Qatar to promoting peaceful solutions and thanked Doha for its continued mediation efforts.
Meanwhile, the Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed that the planned technical discussions involving the US, Iran, Qatar, and Pakistan have been postponed. However, Switzerland clarified that it remains ready to host and facilitate future negotiations, while preparatory arrangements at the Burgenstock venue continue.
The recently signed 14-point MoU between the United States and Iran lays out a roadmap for de-escalation, including a permanent halt to military operations, progress toward a final agreement within 60 days, and further technical discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme.
The agreement also includes steps toward easing economic restrictions, releasing frozen Iranian assets, allowing greater Iranian oil exports through US Treasury waivers, and supporting reconstruction and economic development initiatives in Iran.
With tensions in West Asia remaining a global concern, Qatar’s renewed push for negotiations reflects the growing international effort to prioritize diplomacy over conflict. Although the Switzerland talks have been delayed, the willingness of involved countries to continue engagement signals that diplomatic channels remain open for achieving lasting peace and stability.
