BJP Takes Control of Nurpur BDC as Congress Secures Leadership in Fatehpur Block
The latest Block Development Committee (BDC) elections in Kangra district reflected a mixed political outcome for the two major parties, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking charge of the Nurpur BDC while the Congress emerged victorious in neighbouring Fatehpur Block.
The latest Block Development Committee (BDC) elections in Kangra district reflected a mixed political outcome for the two major parties, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking charge of the Nurpur BDC while the Congress emerged victorious in neighbouring Fatehpur Block.
Although Congress-backed candidates had earlier gained control of the Nurpur Municipal Council by winning six out of nine wards, the party could not translate its urban success into rural leadership. The Congress leadership did not make a strong push for BDC seats and also stayed away from the contest for the chairperson and vice-chairperson positions, allowing BJP-supported candidates to strengthen their hold over the rural governing body.
A major role in the BJP’s victory was played by local MLA Ranbir Singh Nikka, who coordinated support for the party-backed candidates during the election process. In the contest for Nurpur BDC leadership, BJP-backed Raksha Devi secured a convincing victory by receiving 19 out of 25 votes cast to become the chairperson.
For the vice-chairperson post, BJP-supported candidate Rakesh Kaul won with 14 votes. Nurpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Arun Sharma officially announced the election results and declared both candidates elected.
Meanwhile, the political picture was completely different in the neighbouring Fatehpur Development Block, where Congress-backed candidates captured both key posts. Anita Kumari was elected as the BDC chairperson after securing 16 out of 27 votes, defeating her rival who received 11 votes.
Congress-supported Kulwant Singh also won the vice-chairperson election with 16 votes against his opponent’s 11. The election was conducted under the supervision of Fatehpur SDM Vishrut Bharti.
Following the victory, local MLA and Himachal Pradesh Planning Board Vice-Chairman Bhawani Singh Pathania congratulated the newly elected representatives and expressed confidence that they would work for the development of the region.
The BDC election results have highlighted the changing political dynamics in the Kangra district, where both the BJP and Congress managed to establish their influence in different blocks, setting the stage for future political competition in the region.
