India Post Launches Drone Mail Service in Mandi, Revolutionising Delivery in Remote Villages
In a major leap toward modernising India’s postal network, the Department of Posts has launched a drone-based mail delivery service in Mandi district, bringing faster and more efficient connectivity to remote villages located in difficult hilly terrain.
In a major leap toward modernising India’s postal network, the Department of Posts has launched a drone-based mail delivery service in Mandi district, bringing faster and more efficient connectivity to remote villages located in difficult hilly terrain.
The pilot project successfully completed its first drone mail operation between the Mandi Head Post Office and the Rehadhar Branch Post Office in the Drang region. The inaugural flight transported mail in just six minutes, significantly reducing the time required through conventional road transport.
The initiative was officially launched on Friday through a joint collaboration between the Department of Posts and drone logistics company Skye Air. Officials believe the project could transform postal services in remote and hard-to-reach areas across Himachal Pradesh.
Drone Completes 12-Kilometre Round Trip in Just Six Minutes
As part of the trial operation, mail was transported from Mandi to Rehadhar, while the drone simultaneously carried the day’s collected mail back to Mandi. The aerial route covers approximately five to six kilometres one way, enabling quick two-way transportation of postal articles.
Sanjay Kumar, Deputy Superintendent of the Mandi Head Post Office, said the drone successfully completed a nearly 12-kilometre round trip within six minutes.
He explained that traditional mail delivery in the region often faces delays due to mountainous terrain, winding roads, and limited transportation options. The introduction of drone technology is expected to drastically improve delivery efficiency and reduce operational challenges.
Faster and More Reliable Postal Services for Rural Communities
According to Mandi Postmaster Neha Sankhyan, drone-enabled postal services are already operating at around 150 locations across India in partnership with Skye Air.
In Mandi district alone, the service has been introduced at 10 locations, helping postal authorities deliver and collect mail more quickly and reliably from remote villages. The move is expected to strengthen communication and improve access to essential postal services for residents living in isolated regions.
Drones Can Carry Up to 10 Kilograms of Mail
Subhash Dubey, an employee of Skye Air Company, revealed that the drones deployed for postal operations can carry payloads of up to 10 kilograms and travel distances ranging between 30 and 50 kilometres.
These capabilities make drone technology particularly effective for logistics operations in mountainous regions where road connectivity can be challenging and weather conditions often impact transportation.
Currently, eight drones have been deployed across Mandi district to support operations at multiple locations.
A New Era for Public Service Delivery
Officials view the launch as more than just a postal innovation. The initiative represents a significant step toward integrating advanced drone technology into public service delivery across India.
By reducing delivery times, improving accessibility, and lowering dependency on traditional transportation methods, drone-based logistics could play a crucial role in connecting remote communities with essential services.
The successful launch in Mandi highlights India’s growing focus on technology-driven solutions and could pave the way for wider adoption of drone services in sectors such as healthcare, emergency response, e-commerce, and government operations.
As drone technology continues to evolve, projects like this are expected to redefine how essential services reach people living in some of the country’s most challenging geographical locations.
