Zelenskyy Calls for More Pressure on Putin to Force Peace Negotiations
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has renewed his appeal to global leaders, urging them to intensify pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin through tougher sanctions and increased diplomatic efforts to bring Moscow to the negotiating table.
As the Russia-Ukraine war enters its fifth year, Zelenskyy believes that stronger international action could create the conditions necessary for meaningful peace talks and help bring an end to one of the most devastating conflicts in modern Europe.
Speaking during an interview on CBS News’ Face the Nation, Zelenskyy stressed the importance of finding a diplomatic solution before winter arrives.
“Before the winter, we need to find a diplomatic way to sit and speak,” Zelenskyy said.
Ukraine Sees Opportunity as Russian Advances Slow
Zelenskyy’s comments come amid reports suggesting that Ukraine may be gaining momentum on parts of the battlefield. According to a recent assessment by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian military advances have slowed, while Ukrainian forces are experimenting with new operational tactics aimed at breaking the current deadlock.
Military analysts believe the next six months could prove critical. If Ukraine can capitalize on recent battlefield trends, it may strengthen its position in any future peace negotiations with Russia.
The ISW noted that Ukraine currently has a limited but potentially significant opportunity to increase pressure on Russian forces while they remain vulnerable in several areas.
Ukraine Requests More Patriot Missile Systems from the US
Amid escalating Russian attacks, Zelenskyy has also appealed to the United States for additional military assistance, particularly Patriot air defense systems.
The request follows one of the largest Russian aerial assaults on Kyiv since the full-scale invasion began in 2022. Russian forces reportedly launched dozens of cruise and ballistic missiles, putting additional strain on Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Zelenskyy called for increased production of Patriot interceptor missiles.
“Sixty to sixty-five missiles per month for today’s challenges is not enough,” he said.
The Ukrainian leader emphasized that stronger air defenses remain essential to protecting civilians and critical infrastructure from continued missile strikes.
US Signals Support While Expanding Defense Production
Responding to concerns over military supplies, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said Washington is working to significantly expand defense manufacturing capacity.
According to Hegseth, the United States is restructuring production pipelines to ensure a larger and more reliable supply of critical munitions and defense systems.
He also praised European allies for increasing their support to Ukraine and emphasized that Western partners remain committed to helping Kyiv defend itself against ongoing Russian aggression.
Peace Talks Remain Stalled but Diplomatic Efforts Continue
While military developments continue to dominate headlines, diplomatic efforts have not completely stopped.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently acknowledged that peace negotiations are currently stalled. However, he indicated that Washington remains ready to re-engage if an opportunity for progress emerges.
Despite the challenges, Zelenskyy expressed confidence that Russia could eventually participate in serious negotiations.
The Ukrainian president pointed to previous discussions involving the United States as evidence that diplomatic engagement remains possible, provided international partners remain actively involved.
Zelenskyy Wants American Negotiators to Visit Kyiv
As part of his broader diplomatic strategy, Zelenskyy has called for a high-level American delegation to visit Kyiv for direct consultations.
He specifically mentioned senior US officials, including Marco Rubio, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, expressing hope that such a visit could take place within the coming weeks.
According to Zelenskyy, firsthand exposure to conditions in Ukraine would help international negotiators better understand the realities of the war and the urgency of achieving a lasting peace.
“We need to see an American negotiation group in Ukraine. They’ve never been here, and it’s important for them to understand what is happening,” Zelenskyy said.
Ukraine Pushes for Stronger International Support
With battlefield conditions evolving and diplomatic channels still open, Ukraine is continuing to seek stronger support from both the United States and European allies.
Zelenskyy argues that increased sanctions, expanded military aid, and coordinated diplomatic pressure could help change Moscow’s calculations and create a pathway toward future peace negotiations.
As the war shows no immediate signs of ending, the coming months may prove decisive for both military operations and international efforts aimed at securing a negotiated settlement.
