A wave of anger and grief swept through Sarkaghat in Mandi district on Tuesday as thousands of people gathered to demand justice for Siya Guleria, a young girl from Nain village whose brutal murder has shaken the entire region.

The peaceful town turned into a center of protest as citizens from all walks of life assembled at Sarkaghat Park, raising powerful slogans and calling for the strictest punishment for the accused. Many protesters demanded capital punishment, saying the crime has left a deep scar on the community’s conscience.

In a strong show of solidarity, local markets remained shut until noon, reflecting the collective outrage and mourning of the people.

Massive Public Participation Across Groups

The protest witnessed an unprecedented turnout, bringing together student bodies like SFI, ABVP, and NSUI, along with traders, women’s groups, labor unions, farmers’ organizations, and social activists. From senior citizens to young students, hundreds stood united with one voice — justice for Siya.

Emotions ran high as participants paid heartfelt tributes to the victim. Many pledged to continue the fight until justice is served, highlighting that this is not just about one case, but about ensuring safety for every girl in society.

Demand for Justice and Financial Support

Speakers at the protest strongly condemned the horrific crime and urged authorities to act swiftly. Among key demands were the death penalty for the accused and financial assistance of ₹25 lakh to support the victim’s grieving family.

Rising Drug Menace Raises Concern

Beyond the murder case, protesters also raised serious concerns about the increasing drug abuse problem, locally known as “chitta.” Citizens urged the administration to take strict and sustained action to make the region drug-free, linking the rise in crime to substance abuse.

Local Issues Add to Public Anger

Residents also highlighted the suspension of bus services to Nain village over the past month, calling it a major safety and connectivity issue. Protesters said such gaps in basic services further worsen the situation in rural areas.

Voices of Leaders and Activists

Several prominent leaders and social activists addressed the gathering, stressing the need for collective action against crime and social evils. They assured the public that the movement would continue until justice is delivered.

Emotional Farewell to Siya

Earlier, Siya Guleria was cremated in her native village in an emotional ceremony attended by hundreds, including local representatives and officials. The heartbreaking scenes reflected the deep pain felt by the community.
