Infrastructure development in Himachal Pradesh has taken a financial hit as road construction costs have surged by nearly 100 crore, a direct fallout of the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

State Public Works and Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh revealed on Saturday that a sharp 25% increase in bitumen prices has significantly inflated project costs across the state.

“As per our estimates, the department has observed an additional burden of around ₹100 crore due to this price escalation,” Singh said.

📊 Sharp Rise in Road Construction Costs

The minister highlighted how the cost of road construction has increased across multiple categories:

  • 3-metre-wide roads (under PMGSY & NABARD):
    13.75 lakh ➝ 17.75 lakh per km
  • 6-metre-wide roads:
    27.50 lakh ➝ 35.50 lakh per km
  • 10-metre-wide roads:
    41.25 lakh ➝ 53.25 lakh per km
  • Rural road maintenance (AMP):
    11 lakh ➝ 14.15 lakh per km

This surge reflects the growing pressure on infrastructure budgets, especially in a hilly state where road connectivity is crucial.

🌍 Global Conflict, Local Impact

The ongoing tensions involving Israel, the United States, and Iran have disrupted crude oil supply chains, particularly through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Initially, the impact was limited to fuel prices like petrol, diesel, and LPG. However, the ripple effect has now extended to bitumen, a key material used in road construction.

“The impact of this conflict is being felt not just in Himachal but across the country,” Singh noted.

🏗️ Government Seeks Relief, Considers Options

To manage the financial strain, the state government has approached the National Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (NRIDA), requesting it to absorb the additional cost burden.

At the same time, officials are also evaluating whether to temporarily pause certain road projects, hoping that global conditions may stabilize in the coming months.

Another proposal is under preparation to address the increased costs of Annual Maintenance Plan (AMP) roads, which could otherwise put further pressure on the state treasury.

⚠️ What It Means for Himachal

With infrastructure being a backbone for tourism and connectivity in Himachal Pradesh, this cost escalation could potentially delay projects or strain public finances.

However, the government has assured that it is closely monitoring the situation to minimize the impact on citizens.
