In a significant boost to Himachal Pradesh’s tourism sector, the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) has crossed a remarkable milestone, registering a hotel turnover of over ₹100 crore — despite several properties remaining closed for renovation.

HPTDC Chairman Raghuvir Singh Bali shared this achievement during a recent press conference, highlighting the corporation’s steady growth. He noted that when he assumed charge, the turnover stood at approximately ₹80 crore, making this progress particularly noteworthy under challenging circumstances.

What makes this achievement even more impressive is the fact that many state-run hotels were temporarily shut due to ongoing renovation work and limited resources. Bali emphasized that most of these properties had become outdated over time and required urgent modernization to compete with the rapidly growing private hospitality sector.

To address this, the government has initiated a phased renovation plan aimed at upgrading facilities and improving guest experience. Popular tourist destinations like Manali are already witnessing transformation, with multiple hotels undergoing redevelopment with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

However, not all decisions have been smooth. Bali revealed that while the corporation had requested government funding to revive loss-making hotels, eight properties were instead handed over to private operators under the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) model — a move HPTDC did not fully support.

Looking ahead, the corporation is planning ambitious projects to further strengthen tourism infrastructure. One of the key highlights includes a ₹180 crore hotel project at Nagrota Bagwan along the Baner Khad, which will feature Himachal Pradesh’s first-ever musical fountain — a step aimed at enhancing tourist attraction and experience.

Additionally, Bali pointed out that around ₹2,000 crore is being invested in the expansion of Kangra Airport, a move expected to significantly improve connectivity and boost tourist inflow to the region.

In Shimla, the Centre has approved ₹45 crore for the renovation of HPTDC’s Hotel Holiday Home, while renovation work is already underway at three major hotels in Manali.

With a clear focus on modernization, infrastructure development, and strategic expansion, HPTDC appears to be steadily reclaiming its position in Himachal Pradesh’s competitive tourism landscape — proving that even in the face of challenges, growth is possible with the right vision and execution.
