The cyber cell of the Nurpur district police has achieved a major breakthrough in a cyber fraud case by recovering Rs 17.50 lakh and returning it to the victim within a week.
The case was registered at Jawali police station on December 24 following a complaint by Sham Lal, a resident of Samkehar village in Jawali subdivision, who was allegedly cheated by unidentified cyber fraudsters. According to the complaint, the victim had lost Rs 18.73 lakh after his mobile phone was hacked.
Police officials said the Nurpur cyber cell immediately launched a professional investigation using the National Cyber Crime Portal (NCCP), which led to the swift recovery of the defrauded amount.
SP Nurpur Kulbhushan Verma said that the complainant fell prey to fraudsters while trying to resolve an issue related to his Yono App, linked to his bank account. “The victim searched for a customer care number on Google and unknowingly contacted a fake helpline. The fraudsters obtained his Aadhaar and bank details on the pretext of updating the App and later hacked his mobile phone, withdrawing money from his bank account,” he said.
The SP added that further investigation in the case was underway to identify and arrest the accused. He also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and avoid sharing personal or banking details with unknown callers. In case of suspected cyber fraud, citizens were advised to immediately contact the cyber helpline number 1930 or report the matter at the nearest police station without delay.
