A college professor and three students have been booked on charges of ragging, sexual assault and abetment linked to the death of a 19-year-old girl student of Government Degree College, Dharamsala, police officials said on Thursday night.

An FIR has been registered at the Dharamsala police station under Sections 75, 115(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 3 of the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Ragging) Act, 2009 against college professor Ashok Kumar and three students — Harshita, Aakriti and Komolika.

The case was registered following a complaint filed by the victim’s father, Vikram Kumar, a resident of Sidhbari, Dharamsala.

According to the complaint, the victim Pallavi (19) was a second-year student at the college. The complainant alleged that on September 18, 2025, three girl students of the same institution physically assaulted and intimidated his daughter. He further alleged that Ashok Kumar, a professor at the college, subjected Pallavi to obscene acts.

The father stated that following the alleged incidents, Pallavi became extremely frightened and mentally disturbed, leading to a serious deterioration in her physical and mental health. She was initially treated at several hospitals in Himachal Pradesh as her condition worsened.

Subsequently, she was referred to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, where she died during treatment on December 26, 2025.

The complainant told police that he was unable to report the matter earlier as his daughter remained critically ill and traumatised for a prolonged period. He said the family was also in deep shock after her death, which led to a delay in lodging the complaint.

Police officials said that after examining the complaint and conducting a preliminary inquiry, the FIR was registered. The investigation will examine allegations of ragging, physical assault, intimidation and sexual misconduct, as well as the sequence of events that allegedly led to the student’s deteriorating health and death.

A senior police officer said that statements of classmates, teachers, college authorities and family members would be recorded. Medical records from all hospitals where Pallavi was treated, including Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana, are being collected to ascertain the cause of death and any possible link to the alleged incidents.

SP Ashok Rattan said a detailed investigation is underway and assured that all aspects of the case will be examined thoroughly and impartially.
