Zohran Mamdani to Be Sworn In as New York City Mayor Today
Zohran Mamdani to be sworn in as New York City Mayor at midnight as 2026 begins, followed by a public ceremony at City Hall with Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Zohran Mamdani will be sworn in as the Mayor of New York City as the clock strikes midnight ushering in 2026, with inauguration celebrations set to continue throughout New Year’s Day.
The Democrat’s team has planned two swearing-in ceremonies on Thursday, in keeping with long-standing tradition. The first will be a small, private ceremony around midnight with close family members, to be held at a former subway station. This will be followed by a larger public swearing-in ceremony later in the day.
Mamdani will take the oath of office again at a public event scheduled to begin at 1 pm on the steps of City Hall, where he will be sworn in by US Senator Bernie Sanders, one of his prominent political mentors. US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a close ally, will deliver the opening remarks.
The Mayor-elect’s transition team has constituted an inaugural committee that includes actor John Turturro, playwright Cole Escola and author Colson Whitehead, along with community advocates, small business owners and campaign staff. According to the incoming Mayor’s office, committee members helped provide “perspective, guidance and cultural sensibility” for the inauguration events.
The public ceremony will be accompanied by a block party along a stretch of Broadway leading up to City Hall. Thousands of people are expected to attend the celebrations, which will feature music, performances and interfaith elements.
Mamdani officially assumes office with the start of the New Year, marking the beginning of a new mayoral term for the city.
