Industries Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan inaugurated a Rs 24-lakh science laboratory at a government school in Sataun, Sirmaur, strengthening hands-on learning for 300 students and highlighting ongoing development projects in the Shillai constituency.
Industries Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan on Sunday inaugurated a newly constructed science laboratory, built at a cost of Rs 24 lakh, at Government Senior Secondary School, Sataun, in the Shillai Assembly constituency of Sirmaur district.
The minister, who was the chief guest at the school’s annual prize distribution function, said the modern laboratory would benefit nearly 300 students by promoting practical and experiential learning in science. Emphasising that education is the backbone of national and social progress, Chauhan said the state government was working continuously to improve the quality of education.
He said the government had decided to upgrade 100 government schools on the CBSE pattern in the first phase, and three institutions from the Shillai Assembly segment — Sataun, Kaffota and Shillai — had been selected under the scheme.
Encouraging students to move beyond textbooks, Chauhan urged them to actively participate in sports, cultural activities and value-based education for overall personality development. He said it was a matter of pride that five girls from Himachal Pradesh were part of the Kabaddi World Cup–winning team, with three of them belonging to the Shillai constituency. He attributed their success to increased opportunities and encouragement being extended to youth in the region.
The minister said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, comprehensive development was underway across the Shillai constituency. Projects worth over Rs 300 crore had been approved and were at various stages of implementation. These include a Rajiv Gandhi day-boarding school at Sataun being constructed at a cost of Rs 5 crore, the Salwala–Sataun road project costing Rs 16.50 crore to serve as an alternative route during blockages on the Shillai road at Kachhi Dhang, the Manal–Kodga link road estimated at around Rs 24 crore and the Chilon–Choki–Mrigwal road project with an outlay of Rs 8.50 crore.
Chauhan also said that Rs 1.50 crore had been sanctioned for the construction of a Primary Health Centre at Sataun after three bighas of land were made available for the project. He added that work on a 100-bed hospital at Shillai, being built at a cost of Rs 19 crore, would be completed soon. Several other schemes related to roads, education, health, drinking water, electricity and basic infrastructure were also underway and would be completed shortly, providing tangible benefits to residents.
Earlier, the minister inaugurated the function by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Students presented colourful cultural programmes, and Chauhan distributed awards to meritorious students who excelled in academics, sports and cultural activities.
School Principal Jaspal Singh Chaudhary presented the annual report and highlighted the school’s achievements. The minister was honoured by the school management and local residents with a traditional Sirmauri dress, a loi and a memento.
