Man Attacks Traffic Policeman in Shimla After Being Stopped for Smoking in Public

A traffic policeman was assaulted on duty in Shimla’s Sanjauli suburb on Tuesday evening after he warned a man against smoking in a public place.

According to reports, Constable Sunil, posted at the Sanjauli Police Station, was performing his routine traffic duty near the HRTC office when he noticed a man smoking in a public area. The constable advised him to stop, reminding him that smoking in public is a punishable offence.

The man initially extinguished his cigarette and walked away toward Sanjauli Chowk. However, a few minutes later, he returned and attacked the constable. Eyewitnesses said the assailant punched the officer and tried to drag him toward a nearby hotel. Despite attempting to defend himself, the constable sustained injuries before locals intervened, prompting the attacker to flee.

The injured officer immediately reported the incident to the Sanjauli Police Station. Acting swiftly, police apprehended the accused, identified as Sandeep, a resident of Kotkhai. Preliminary investigation revealed that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the assault.

A case has been registered under Sections 132, 121(1), and 221 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Sanjauli Station House Officer stated that attacks on on-duty personnel are treated as serious offences, and strict action will be taken against the accused.
