Tourists Warned to Stay Away from Riverbanks in Lahaul-Spiti
Icy conditions have made riverbanks dangerously slippery and unstable
With the onset of winter, the Lahaul-Spiti district administration has issued a public safety advisory warning tourists and residents to avoid riverbanks and streamside areas. The advisory comes amid growing concerns over visitors venturing close to rivers for photographs and selfies — a trend that has become increasingly hazardous with changing weather conditions.
The advisory highlights particularly sensitive zones between Koksar and Tandi (Keylong) and between Athargoo Bridge and Sumdo (Kaza), where icy conditions have made riverbanks extremely slippery and treacherous.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Shivani Mehla, falling temperatures have led to the formation of thin ice layers along the riverbanks, increasing the risk of slipping, falling, or accidental drowning. She added that the Chandra River currently carries icy-cold water, making any rescue operation both difficult and dangerous.
The advisory cautions, “The formation of ice sheets and unpredictable water flow pose serious dangers to anyone attempting to approach or enter the river. Such reckless behavior endangers not only the lives of individuals but also those of rescue personnel.”
To ensure public safety, district police have strictly advised against going near or entering any river or stream during this season. The SP warned that violators may face legal consequences, including up to eight days of imprisonment, a fine ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000, or both.
SP Mehla urged all tourists and residents to comply with the advisory to ensure a safe and accident-free winter season in Lahaul-Spiti. Officials emphasized that these precautions are essential not only for personal safety but also for the collective well-being of the community and the rescue teams working in these harsh and remote conditions.
