Sweden is sending radar systems and military anti-drone equipment to Denmark ahead of this week’s European summit in Copenhagen, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said on Monday. The move follows a series of drone intrusions that forced Denmark to temporarily shut several airports.

Denmark will host EU leaders on Wednesday, followed by a summit of the 47-member European Political Community on Thursday. Authorities had already stepped up security for the events after reports of drones in the area.

Last week, drones disrupted air traffic at six Danish airports, including Copenhagen, the busiest hub in the Nordic region. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the incidents as a “hybrid attack” on Denmark.

On the same day, Denmark imposed a ban on civilian drone flights after multiple sightings near military installations overnight.

NATO announced on Saturday it was bolstering its mission in the Baltic Sea in light of the situation, with a German air-defense frigate arriving in Copenhagen on Sunday to support airspace monitoring.

While Denmark has not formally assigned blame, Frederiksen suggested Moscow could be responsible, calling Russia “the main state actor threatening European security.”

The Kremlin has denied any involvement in the drone flights.
